LCE News from Mrs. Blaney

October, 2022

Dear Families,

October is one of my favorite months at LCE. The students get to experience many fun lessons and events, and the month ends with our largest fundraiser of the year, the Halloween Haunt. There was an incredible number of volunteers to make this event happen. It was chaired by Stephanie Arnold and Leigh Smith, and they created a wonderful experience for our students. Thank you to all those who donated their time and talent to the Haunt!

Because you are receiving this newsletter prior to Halloween, I want to remind everyone of our policies. We do not allow candy at school unless it is part of a community project or a lesson. For example, this year, the Lions Really Care club is collecting candy for Operation Gratitude. We also ask students not to wear costumes to school unless it is part of a lesson or a teacher-approved event. 1st-grade students have the chance to dress up and perform for their parents for their Wild Things parade and performance on Monday at 1:15.

This newsletter will offer you a glimpse into the past month and share some events coming up in November.

October at LCE

COVID Testing for Volunteers

As of Monday, Oct. 31, parent volunteers only need to COVID test once a week instead of every day during the weeks that they volunteer. If you volunteer outdoors (like those of you who will volunteer for CARLINE), you do not have to take a COVID test.

Responsive Teaching

Round One of our Responsive Teaching program ends on Tuesday, November 1. Ms. Jennifer Ma will then administer assessments to provide data points for our students in the program to help us analyze their progress. The sixth-grade before and after-school offerings will continue, and parents will be notified if the extended day 1st and 3rd-grade programs will continue or cease during this time for assessments. Parents of students in the Responsive Teaching Program will receive updates at Parent-Teacher conferences and/or progress reports that will be sent with the report cards. After analysis of the assessment data, students will either be recommended to continue in Round Two of Responsive Teaching or exited from the program. Round Two begins the week after Thanksgiving break.

Title I Kindergarten Enrichment Program

Parents of students who qualify for this extended day program are invited to attend a parent information meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 2. An email was sent to these families on Saturday, Oct. 29. The meeting is a Zoom meeting, and it begins at 6:00 p.m.

Parent-Teacher Conferences and Trimester One Report Cards

All parents of TK - 3rd-grade parents are invited to a parent-teacher conference during the week of Nov. 7 - 10. Parents of 4th - 6th-grade students will receive an invitation to attend a parent-teacher conference if the teacher feels it is necessary. Upper-grade teachers have more students and therefore are not required to have conferences with every family that week. That week, 1st - 6th-grade students will be released at 11:35, and the afternoons will be reserved for parent-teacher conferences. The TK and Kindergarten students keep their regular AM and PM schedules.

Report cards will be shared with students on Thursday, Nov. 10. Report cards will come home in a special envelope, and parents should sign the envelope and return it (keep the report card) to school so that we know you received the report card and can reuse the envelope next trimester. Only 1st - 6th-grade students will get a report card this trimester. TK and Kindergarten students get their first report cards at the end of the second trimester.

The Spot - LCE Wellness Room

We had a Parent Open House and a Parent Q&A Session at The Spot, and both were a success. Parents provided great feedback for this pilot program. At this date, we have Opt-In notices for 561 of our students and Opt-Out or No Response for 59 of our students. The Spot is being used by many of our students every day, and we are starting to build groups for students who may need support for dealing with big feelings, help with executive functioning skills, and tips for successful social interactions. Ms. Rachel Hirshberg is the leader of this space, and she welcomes your questions and feedback.
The Spot Wish List

We've added a few items to our Amazon Wish List. Thank you for all of the donations so far!

Birdhouse Voting

Kathy Boyett, LCE Paraprofessional, built three beautiful birdhouses, and each student got to vote for their favorite by placing a penny inside their birdhouse of choice. The winning birdhouse will be featured in one of our planted areas. Students will see it mounted soon, but in the meantime, here is the winner with over 250 votes.
Big picture

LCFEF Jog-a-Thon

The Jog-a-Thon is an annual event that raises money and creates a lot of fun for our kids! We are so thankful for the efforts of the La Cañada Education Foundation. The foundation provides our students with Art and Music classes and keeps our class sizes small. The kids will each receive a t-shirt on Tuesday and should wear it on Wednesday. They will participate in the Jog-a-Thon during their PE classes.

Fentanyl Information

I hope you were able to read Superintendent Wendy Sinnette's email regarding Fentanyl. I am including a link to that email here as well as a flyer attached at the end of this newsletter. You may also wish to view this recorded webinar from the California Department of Public Health.
