Thoughts of Dr. Pacatte

On behalf of the Gurnee School District Board of Education, I am proud to announce Mr. Ryan Lazar as the new Principal of Viking School effective July 1, 2021. Mr. Lazar has served our district for sixteen years. He was hired as a middle school social studies teacher and filled that role for eight years and became Assistant Principal, filling that role for another eight years. Mr. Lazar has also served as the Assessment Coordinator for the past five years during his time as the Assistant Principal. He is an exceptional administrator who, when given a challenge, digs in and works to become an expert. He understands where this District has been and understands that we need to respond to our community and the evolving need to improve our support of diverse learners. He will provide a solid transition as Mr. Jones moves into retirement.

Through a tough competitive process, Mr. Lazar has hired Mrs. Kim Van Matre, middle school teacher from River Trail School, to fill the vacancy created by his promotion. Mrs. Van Matre is an experienced and respected educator who has worked at three out of our four schools. She is known for her willingness to jump in, creative solutions, and has a vision to create stronger continuity and connections between our three schools.

These are exciting times for Viking School and I am confident these educators will serve our students and families in an exceptional manner.

Sweet Blackberry

This week, 5th graders at Prairie Trail School enjoyed a special presentation by Karyn Parsons, actress of the acclaimed TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and founder of Sweet Blackberry. This is a non-profit organization that raises awareness of little-known stories of African American achievement through storytelling in the form of animated films and picture books. Following the presentation, students chose a person to research and began writing their own poem. This is a wonderful extension of our mission to raise cultural awareness and apply writing skills to a real-world setting.
