The Central Scoop
September 13th, 2019
From the Principal's Desk...
When we have inclement weather, the carpool line is a little longer before and after school. As a result, I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about our traffic and carpool line procedures on Central Avenue. Please share this information with anyone who picks up your children - babysitters, grandparents, neighbors, and friends.
- Please follow the suggestions of our supervisors in green vests on the curb in front of the school. They are volunteer staff members who are there to help your child get in and out of your vehicle safely. These adults are also safe people for students to use if they need help finding a caregiver.
- Pull your vehicle up as far as possible in the line, but leave room to pull out so you don't need to back up to get around the car in front of you.
Keep pulling up as cars exit the line to keep it moving.
- Stay in your car at all times. Please don't leave your car or park it in the carpool line. This is very dangerous for you and for those trying to maneuver around your car. If you must walk your child to the door, please park your car across the street or a block away so you can walk your child safely to school.
- Use the crosswalk on Central Avenue. We have a wonderful crossing guard on Central Ave. His name is Dudley and he is hired by the Wilmette Police Department. Please make sure that your entire family uses the crosswalk on Central Avenue. Dudley will ensure that you get across the street safely.
NEW THIS YEAR
- To improve the waiting time in the carpool line, we are extending the carpool line to the end of the orange cones on Central Avenue this year (to the end of the school’s driveway). Please watch the signs that say, Pull Forward As Far As Possible. Supervisors in green vests will be at the curb to assist you. The Wilmette Police Department and the Village prefer parents use Central Avenue for pick-up and drop-off. Please note - 10th Street is NOT intended to be used as a carpool line.
- We welcome parent volunteers for both AM and PM curb duty! A sign-up will be created soon for any parent volunteers who would like to assist in carpool line safety now that the line has been extended. Thank You!
Warmly,
~ Becky

Friday Early Release Reminders = Last Posting
Each Friday, all students in grades 1-4 are dismissed at 2:15pm. Afternoon Kindergarteners will follow their regular afternoon schedule: 12:40 PM-3:15 PM. The following students may stay at Central for "childcare" today if they fit the following criteria (and they are automatically "on the list" - there is nothing you need to do!):
Your child attends the Park District After School Recreation Program and takes the 3:15pm bus from Central School to the Wilmette Park District Recreation Center.
You have a child in grades 1-4 who has a sibling in PM kindergarten.
** Note - if your child participates in a Friday After School Park District Club here at Central (and these clubs start on 9/9) then he/she can automatically stay for childcare starting on Friday, September 13th.
** Also note that if you do not want your child to attend childcare (and he/she is automatically signed-up) then a parent must sign out the child to go home at 2:15pm. We consider childcare to be an extension of the school day, so our procedures are the same when there is an absence. A child cannot leave for a playdate at 2:15 PM without parent permission and documentation here in the office.
MAP Assessments = Last Posting
There is nothing your child needs to do in preparation for these assessments. The tests are taken on computers and adapt based on a child’s success. The information we receive from MAP along with classroom assessment data is helpful for our teachers to best meet the academic needs of each individual child.
No Dogs on School Property = Last Posting
Please...no dogs on school property (including sidewalks). There are signs posted to remind you of this important Village ordinance. I'm a dog lover myself, but we really enforce this rule to protect the safety and comfort of our students. If you retrieve your child from school (and like to walk your pooch at the same time) please pick a rendezvous spot across the street from the school. Our crossing guards will make sure your child crosses the street safely to get to you.
