Unit 03
Energizers (5 min)
Below you will find a new spin on some energizers you may have already used in your classroom. Feel free to continue to use the other energizers listed in Unit 01 by clicking here: http://bit.ly/2evd1Dc.
I love math: use two hands and have each student make a two digit number. Students add the two 2-digit numbers together.

Optional Unit 03 Activities
Inside/Outside Circle
Materials Needed:
- dry erase boards/markers for each student
- 12 paper plates or numbers for kids to stand on in a circle (make it look like a clock to spiral back in analog clocks, a unit you will be coming to soon)
To Play:
- Assign students to stand on the numbers. This will be the outside circle and help define the circle as the students rotate.
- Remaining students will be the inside circle.
- When the music begins, students on the inside circle move in a clockwise direction around. When the music stops, the teacher calls for both sets of students to solve a word problem. Teacher directs the outside circle to solve it using one strategy that has been taught, while the inside circle solves it using another strategy.
- To add base ten blocks in, there can be two special places on the numbers that get to use base ten blocks to solve regardless of what the teacher calls the outside circle to do. You can also add a "free choice" space on the inside circle so students are able to choose their strategy regardless of what the teacher calls.
- Students compare strategies with the partner.
- Students switch inside outside places.
Four Corners - Lead4ward Strategy
1. Assign each corner of the room a preference (drinks, candy bars, TV show, etc.)
2. Students move to their favorite corner.
3. Students then huddle in duos or trios.
4. Teacher poses a type of word problem and assigns the way to solve the problem by the corners (corner one base ten blocks, corner 2 expanded form/place value addition, corner 3 open number line, corner 4 composition and decomposition of friendly numbers to form compatible numbers..
5. Students collaborate with their group to solve the problem using the strategy in the corner .
6. Teacher sees and hears the students’ thinking and clarifi es/verifi es as appropriate.
7. One spokesperson from the group stays to explain the strategy while the other group members move around to hear how the problem was solved using the other strategies.
Pick up the Slip Up - A Lead4ward Strategy
1. Organize students into thinking groups.
2. Students create A/B cards using notebook paper, sticky notes, or note cards and place them on their desks in front of them.
3. Teacher presents two examples of how to solve a word problem using two different strategies (open number line, base ten blocks, friendly numbers, expanded for place value addition/subtraction): one is correct and one is a “slip up” or common mistake students often make.
4. The teacher instructs students to:
- “Think!” (think about which strategy is the slip up or mistake)
- “Hover!” (students hover their hand over their ABC cards showing they are ready)
- “1-2-3, PICK UP THE SLIP UP!” (students grab the letter of the slip up and hold it high)
7. Students summarize what they learned and any mistakes they now know to avoid (this can be a writing activity).
1. Guided Math
3. Review/Preview:
Two and Three Dimensional shape monsters.
Materials needed:
- different two dimensional shapes for tracing (students could also bring in three dimensional objects for making the monsters as well)
- Markers
- Glue
- Tape
- Collage Materials (pipe cleaners, googly eyes, cotton balls, sequins, and colored paper strips.)
- Scissors
- 7 pieces of folded paper to make a book.
Give students various two dimensional shapes up to 12 sided shapes (dodecagons). The students will trace the shapes on a folded piece of construction paper. Then the students complete the sentence stem "This is the _________ monster. It has ____ edges and ____ vertices" (Students fill in the blank with the name of the shape. Give the students a reference page so they can reference the shape as they create their shape monster book). The students can then elaborate fictional details about the monster for their book (ex: She sleeps in the trees and likes to eat sticky candy).

I love math: Students in a group of four each make a two digit number. The students then add the four numbers together using various strategies for addition.
Open Number line Practice: In this activity, create craft sticks that have one number written on one end of the craft stick and another on the opposite end. Create a dozen of these sticks. Draw a point on the craft stick. The students take a set of clothespins that have numbers written on them, and place the clothespin on the appropriate open number line craft stick. More than one clothespin can be used for each craft stick.
Example: The craft stick has the number 700 on the left side and 780 on the right side with a point closer to 780. The student takes a clothespin that says 767 and clips it to this craft stick.
Closing (5 min): Relate back to learning and language objectives
