"Bear Essentials" Weekly e-Newsletter, February 13, 2020
One of the reasons our school is so great is because of our parent involvement. I would like to invite each of you to consider how you can support our school's PTO. The PTO is an amazing group that supports our students and staff in so many ways. At this time, we have a small but mighty group of parents who need your help! If you can help in any way, please click on the link below. Examples of helping could be sending in some items for a party, helping with a fundraiser, taking tickets at the door of an event, or helping to clean up after an event. EASY! Won't you step up today? Click below to answer a two question survey.
I hope you have a great long weekend, enjoying family and friends!
Your Principal and Partner,
Conference Week Begins on Monday and Runs Until Friday
Please also remember that students will be dismissed early on both Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Dismissal will begin at noon rather than 2:45, so make sure to make arrangements for your child. If your child will be going home a different way than usual, please send a note into the front office to let us know.
A Literacy Night Special Thank You
Our school and our staff Literacy Team would like to say a special thank you to Mr. Arthur Shumate (Ashley and Ethan's dad) for being our Guest Reader during Literacy Night. His reading performance of 'Giraffes Can't Dance' brought in big crowds, and even an encore performance!
Thank you, Mr. Shumate! You were a big hit!

The K-Kids have done it again! They made cards for the seniors at the retirement home in Duluth. We would like to thank Pam Frey in advance for taking the cards and helping our students Share Kindness in our community.
The K-Kids will meet again on Monday, March 16 at 7:45 am in the Media Center.
Anti-Defamation League Southeast "No Place For Hate" Student Contest
Who: Students in grades 3-5
What: The contest asks students to imagine a world without hate. Students should consider what that would feel like, look like, sound like, and what can be done to make the world a place where all people are accepted and appreciated for who they are. Students should also consider what they can personally do to help create a world without hate, and who inspires them to work towards this goal.
How: Through original written or artistic expression (essays, poetry, short stories, screen plays, videos, drawings, paintings, photography, collage and computer art)
When: Students create and submit entries through mail by March 13, 2020. Please pick up an entry form from outside your counselors' door.
Why: Because we are counting on YOU to make our communities no place for hate!
Pick up entry forms outside Ms. Marantz and Ms. Penland's door. If you need the school to mail your entry for you, please turn it in by March 12.

Gwinnett Online Campus (GOC) Registration Information
Digital Learning Days
The Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) 2019-2020 school calendar includes two make-up days to address school days missed due to inclement weather. In addition to these days, GCPS also has the option of making up days missed due to inclement weather using Digital Learning Days.
A Digital Learning Day is considered a school day, so students will be accountable for completing the teacher assignments from home, just as they would do at school. The assignments will be found on the teacher’s eClass course page under the Digital Learning Day icon and will be checked by the teacher and considered in the grading process.

We Have a School Store
Berkeley Lake Recycles
Berkeley Lake recycles aluminum cans and old clothes and shoes (in any condition) in the two bins in the upper parking lot. The Green Team receives 10¢ per pound of donations, which helps pay the fee for the weekly paper and cardboard pick-up. The aluminum cans are recycled at Progressive Recycling on Simpson Circle. Please support our Green Team by recycling these items here at Berkeley Lake. Thank you!
Remember to Save Those Box Tops!
One easy way to support your school is through the PTO Box Tops for Education collection. Send in Box Tops from products you purchase. To help with counting, you can download this Box Tops Collection Sheet.
Make sure to put your Box Tops on the sheet or in a bag with your name and teacher on it. Drop it into the wooden box in the main hallway near the water fountain. Doing this automatically enters you into a contest.
Each month, we’ll hold a random drawing of all students who submit Box Tops. Winners will be announced on the morning announcements at the end of each month. The prize? A coupon for a free ice cream or an item from the student store. This fundraiser has helped us earn hundreds of dollars for our school!
