Year 6 Newsletter
Term 2 - 5th February, 2016
Unit of Inquiry;
Central Idea: Exploration leads to discoveries, new understandings and has numerous consequences.
Lines of Inquiry:
What are the reasons for exploration? (CAUSATION)
How do explorations help us understand the world around us? (CONNECTION)
Is there a need to continue with exploration? (REFLECTION)
Coming up: Our new Sharing the Planet Unit -
Distribution of resources affects communities and individuals’ access to equal opportunities.
Children will attend an N.G.O. conference at Kowloon Junior School to learn about what action people are taking to ensure communities have equal opportunities. Each child will have a choice of four talks from the 24 organisations represented. UNICEF have already spoken with our year 6 children about access to water. We learned the shocking fact that 1 in 8 people in our world do not have access to clean water. We will inquire into ways in which these types of inequalities can be addressed and what action we can take to help.
English:
During our next unit we will be investigating the news through multimedia channels, discussing the difference between fact and opinion and writing our own news stories.
Maths:
The children will be applying their number skills when researching data linked to current affairs. They will be developing their data handling skills through google surveys, selecting relevant data to create their own infographics.
Exploration Presentations
Year 6 have enjoyed role playing their chosen explorer and presenting their research to the class. They were put on the spot in the Hot Seat to answer some fabulous questions from their peers. The children recounted a large variety of famous expeditions and we were treated to 'visits' from Zheng He, Neil Armstrong, Amelia Earhart, Christopher Columbus and Marco Polo to name just a few! Many children went to great efforts to create very imaginative props and costumes. Some explorers even sailed into the classroom on boats!
People of Passion - Jenny Quinton
People of Passion - Mina Guli
Mina Guli founded the NGO THRST to raise global awareness of the water crisis. An accident at 22 resulted in a breakage to her spine and the doctors told her she could never run again. being told that she 'couldn't do something' actually resulted in the opposite affect and 9 months later she took part in her first 'Ironman' competition. On February 1st, Mina embarked on an incredible journey to run across 7 deserts in 7 continents in 7 weeks. She will run the equivalent of a marathon a day for 40 days totaling 1688km. Her incredible story touched all of our hearts and she has inspired us all to take action, however small.
We can track her incredible journey on: https://www.thirst4water.org
