Legislative Update - HF 923
On February 21, Jonathan Drewes testified in front of the Civil Law and Data Practices Policy Committee opposing bill, HF923, which would limit a judge's discretion in awarding attorney's fees to a successful litigant. Our firm has a strong dedication to keeping legal fees and costs as low as possible to assist low and moderate income clients with legal needs; access to justice should not be dependent on financial ability. As part of our firm's strategy towards that goal, we take on a many contingency based cases where we seek our fees from the wrongdoer. This bill, if enacted, would limit the ability of attorneys to take on cases where a client cannot afford to pay legal bills out of pocket, thereby making it harder for low to moderate income clients to find attorneys to pursue legal rights in court.
Drewes Law vision for the future includes keeping an eye out for bills that have an impact on: access to justice, funding our judiciary system, and real estate.
Drewes Law may reach out to you in the future about legislative bills or proposals. Democracy is dependent on constituents having their voice heard: you can contact your local representative and offer your voice, opinion, and thoughts through a simple 5 minute phone call, letter, or even schedule a meeting with you representative.

Foreclosure: Sales Continue to Drop
In December, Jonathan Drewes presented on a national panel for the National Business Institute concerning alternatives to foreclosure, lender liability issues, and recent foreclosure case law developments.
Over the last few calendar years, Hennepin County foreclosure sales have drastically decreased.
In 2015, the monthly average of foreclosure sales was 118 per month. In 2016, there were at total of 1,116, sales averaging at 86 per month. So far in 2017, there have been a total of about 800 foreclosure sales, averaging at about 66 per month.
Will foreclosure sale averages continue to drop throughout this coming year?
