TGen

TGen is a fun and educational field trip idea. Mrs. Wheelington’s class went for a visit in December. TGen is short for Translational Genomics Research Institute and it is located in Phoenix, AZ. While there, we did hands on activities, we went on a facility tour, and learned information from the guide.

The hands on activities were interesting and fun. The first was making DNA models. We made the double helix model and learned how to split DNA. The other activity was using a microtip pipet to color in pictures and DNA models with little bubbles. It was hard to get it correctly because some bubbles were big and others very tiny. Some people figured out that you can adjust the size of the tip to make it easier.

During the tour, we observed that the floor patterns on each floor was a double helix. We got to explore the labs and talk about what the scientists were doing. The guide told us what is studied in each area. They store their specimens in refrigerators and name the fridges after Disney characters. We thought that was a good way to label. The zebra fish were a big hit! We learned that zebra fish and humans share 70% of the same DNA!

Our guide was also our lecturer. She was energetic, kind and helpful. We learned that the facility is managed by one super computer. Without it nothing else would run. She shared a video about a girl name Shelby that had a very rare disease. TGen was able to analyze her body and find a treatment that matched her specifically. After that, Shelby was able to walk to school, run, have fun and live a more normal life.

Fun Fact: It took 10 years and 2.7 billion dollars to analyze the DNA of ONE person! Today, it takes 48 hours and it costs $700.00.

TGen is open to the public! You can go to their website to schedule a tour and learn all about this unique non-profit organization. www.tgen.org
