Crazy Doc's rant and raves...
- We will not have a staff meeting next week, but please look for an email from Sherri about Student Led conferences.
- If you send a student to the focus room please do so with one of the tickets Casey has provided, that way she knows why they are there. If they do not have a ticket they will be sent back to class.
- Please remember to give yourself credit for the events you attend. Each teacher is expected to attend 3 after school events. Next year we will move to a model where each grade level and department is represented at each PTA meeting. Here is the check in for our events so far: https://docs.google.com/a/sps.org/spreadsheets/d/1xru7fuenf01e2mb01wCoQhbrDw_zVEI_wImMFI7wA1g/edit?usp=sharing
Teacher Spotlight
Thank you to Susan Robb, who has been super sub this year. We have had a couple big events this year and Susan has been just a phone call away.
Do you have a idea for a person in the spotlight? Please let me know.

The Power of Free Will
Conscious Discipline teaches that "no matter how much pressure we put on children to behave, it is still their choice to submit their will to us". One way to give students free will is by offering a positive two-choice directive (without judgment). For example, if a student isn't completing their work you could offer them two choices. "Steven, I see you're having trouble getting started. You have a choice. You may start with the odd numbers or you may start with the even numbers. What is your choice? You chose to start with the even numbers". Always create choices that refocus the student on the goal you have for them. Remember that conscious discipline teaches that all statements should be stated without judgment.
For students who do not comply to this, it might be that they are suffering from decision fatigue due to stressors in their life. Some students might need encouragement realizing they are even capable of making choices. Teachers can reinforce these students by recognizing when they have completed a choice. "Sarah, I noticed you chose to draw today". This helps reinforce that the student is capable of making a positive choice and will enable them in time to be able to complete a positive two choice directive.
Lastly, with any behavior system or model, keeping it consistent so students can learn the appropriate behaviors and responses is the key to the system or model actually working.
