Met Gala Masquerade Ball
The Homecoming Dance is
Saturday, September 23, 2023 from 7-10pm
in the JOHS cafeteria.
Tickets are on sale at GoFan.co for $15.
The theme is the Met Gala Masquerade!
To bring a guest to Homecoming from another school, see Dr. Hagengruber in room 259 to pick up a Homecoming Guest Permission Form. Forms must be signed and returned by Wednesday, September 20th, and all students from Overton or from another high school must have a valid student ID to enter the dance.

National Merit Semifinalist
We are excited to announce that John Overton High is the ONLY zone high school in MNPS to have a National Merit Semifinalist. Mr. Vincent Guo in the Health Science Academy is a National Merit Semi Finalist! National Merit honors students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Vincent will get a chance to compete for the very prestigious National Merit Scholarship. We are so proud of Vincent for pursuing academic excellence.
Free Home Internet
Need internet at home? You may qualify for a free program though the government. Come to Tusculum Elementary on Saturday, September 23rd from 10am to 2pm to register for free home internet. Please see the flyers for more information, or call 615-669-2708.

Travel to NYC and DC
Ms. Fitz is organizing a 5-day trip to New York City and Washington D.C. that will take place at the end of May 2024! There will be an informational meeting on Tuesday, September 19th at 6:00 pm in Room 229. All Overton parents and guardians are welcome to attend. Yearbook
The Yearbook is Back!
We've had some changes in the picture day schedule:
November 6: 9th grade
November 7: 10th &11th grade
November 9: Seniors (tux and drape provided)
Pictures will be taken in the big gym on the left side balcony.
Put it on your calendars and be on the lookout for yearbook sales information. We need parent volunteers to help with school pictures. Sign up to volunteer here! As a thank you for helping, Jostens (the picture company) will give you a coupon code for any pictures you order. Multilingual volunteers are especially appreciated.
Overton Cluster Corner
The Overton Cluster Night Football Game has been postponed to
Basketball Season in light of the situation with our football field bleachers.
PAC Meeting
Our next Overton Cluster PAC Meeting is Monday, September 25th from 6-7pm at Croft Middle School.
There is a need to have an Overton Cluster PAC leadership group.
There are typically 3 positions: Chair, co-chair, secretary
That team does the following:
- Facilitate the Overton Cluster meetings
- Secures the meeting space
- Send out meeting invites
- Create agendas
- Bring speakers
- Have notes from the meetings
- Attend District PAC meetings
- Bring information from your cluster to the District meetings

Show Us YOUR Nashville
Show Us YOUR Nashville Student Contest
Students ages 8-18 are invited to participate in "Show Us YOUR Nashville," a creative contest for young Nashvillians to present ideas about how to improve our city. Prize winners will receive up to $1,000. The deadline is Sept. 22. To enter click: SHOW US YOUR NASHVILLE

Belmont Bell Tower Virtual INFO Session
Belmont University will offer a Virtual Information session on September 19th , 2023 at 6:30 pm- 7:30 PM on Zoom for students & their families to receive a formal introduction and welcome from Belmont University, more detailed information about the Bell Tower scholarship program, a panel discussion with current Scholars, and a time allotted for Q&A. ACT
The ACT held at school is on Tuesday, October the 3rd. This is for seniors only. You must sit for the ACT to be eligible to graduate according to state regulations. You will be registered through the school for the October 3rd date. Any other date for which you want to register you have to do on your own.

Counseling News
Alive's Family Retreat
Families with children under the age of 18 who have experienced a death are welcome to register now for a one-day retreat filled with togetherness, remembrance, and play. It’s a chance for families to strengthen their bond in the midst of grief. The day will be packed full of activities such as archery, rock climbing, canoeing, and braving the giant swing! Sprinkled in that mix of fun will be opportunities for families to reflect on their grief journey as well as honor their special person. Families may register at the link below!

Date: Sat, October 14, 2023 | Time: 10 AM – 7 PM (Optional overnight on October 13 at Camp Widjiwagan’s well-appointed Guest House. Each family suite sleeps up to six with a private full bath)

Athletics
Basketball Conditioning
Anyone interested in playing basketball will need to get their physicals as soon as possible. Conditioning will be every Tuesday and Thursday. The season begins in November. Football Schedule
The football team plays at home on September 22 FOR HOMECOMING!! Game time starts at 7:00 PM. Also, we have an update to the schedule: The game against Summit that was previously scheduled on Friday, October 6 has been moved to Thursday, October 5 due to the fall break holiday. Tennis Tuesdays
Tennis Tuesdays is starting back up again. If you're interested in learning tennis with the possibility of making the team in the Spring, come join us at the courts on Tuesdays. 2:30-4:00.

DECA
On Monday, September 18th, we will have a DECA meeting in the mezzanine during 2nd block. If you are interested in joining DECA this year, this is a MANDATORY meeting. To be able to attend the meeting, please come by Mr. Cotham's class (Room 154) and grab a pass either today (Friday) or on Monday. You will need to check in with your 2nd block teacher on Monday and provide them with the pass.
Interact Club
Students interested in developing leadership skills, planning service projects and promoting international understanding should join Interact Club! Click INTERACT CLUB to input your student information if you would like to attend. Your teacher will receive an e-hall pass for the meeting date and time. The club will meet biweekly on the following dates first semester 8:45-9:13 AM in the Library Garage: September 20th, October 4th, 25th and November 8th & 29th. We look forward to seeing you there! Bell Schedule

Enriching Scholars
Starting September 23 Overton High School will be participating in MNPS’ Enriching Scholars Program. This enrichment program will provide Reading and Math instruction and support two Saturdays a month throughout the school year. Enriching Scholars will be provided by MNPS teachers and staff. Transportation will be provided if needed, and students will be served breakfast and lunch. If you would like your child to participate, please sign up using the QR code on the Enriching Scholars flyer or click THIS LINK.
Find My Bus Stop
The Find My Bus Stop online tool provides families with the planned school bus route/stop information. Actual route/stop times could vary due to driver shortage route coverage, traffic or mechanical breakdowns. If your student’s bus is more than 15 minutes later than expected feel free to call (615) 259-INFO (4636).
To find your student's route and stop:
- Use the Find My Bus Stop online search tool.
- Enter your student's grade and your address for the result to generate.
Homework Hotline
Free homework help and tutoring for students K to 12 is available from the Homework Hotline. It's a great resource and available Monday to Thursday 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Call 615-298-6636. We offer help in: English, Arabic, Spanish, French, Hindi, and Farsi. https://homeworkhotline.info

Infinite Campus Portal
Campus Portal allows families to see real-time class and assignment grades, homework, test scores, upcoming due dates, attendance information, and discipline incidents.
To create your Campus Portal account, email Mr. Krech for your activation code: austin.krech@mnps.org.
Once you have a Campus Portal account, you can receive notifications through the mobile app.

Schoology Parent Account
Student work also can be reviewed in Schoology, the district's learning management system. Families can sign up to receive an update on student work via email from Schoology. To create your Schoology Parent account, email Lori Bervoets for your activation code: lwbervoets@mnps.org.
If you’re having trouble with your account, Ms. Bervoets can contact the appropriate providers for help.
MNPS online payment system
Parents can create an account by visiting the SchoolCash Online webpage on our website. They can then attach their student(s) to their profile.
How to view the Newsletter in additional languages.
To translate the newsletter into another language, click anywhere on the newsletter so that it opens in a browser. At the top of the screen will be a "translate" dropdown box where you can choose which language and have it translated (see picture).
