A Message From Mr. Kampmann
February is here! The days are getting longer and before we know it spring break will be upon us. To kick off our second semester we have made some small additions to our daily morning announcements. Everyday, classrooms here at school and students at home can log in to my personal WebEx room at 8:50am for our morning announcements. Now in addition to our birthday celebrations, weather reports, general announcements and jokes of the day we are adding Wellness Wednesday and our Word of the Week.
On Wednesdays Mr. Kollross will be sharing important information that will help us to keep our bodies and brains healthy and ready to learn. In the past few weeks he has discussed the importance of sleep, where we get our energy from and an awareness of all the ingredients in the foods and drinks that we put in our bodies.
Our Word of the Week highlights some of the character traits and soft skills that will help prepare our students to be active and engaged citizens and better prepared to be successful in what ever they choose to do later in life. Our use of classroom discussions, videos and guest speakers from our local community will help communicate these messages to our students. Parents play a vital role in instilling your personal and family values in your children, our school can also play a significant role in helping families to foster and promote good character as well. My hope is that by sharing with you what we are discussing each week at school, you as parents can continue these conversations at home and discuss what these different themes mean to you and your family.
Last week we discussed the theme of respect, what it looks and sounds like as well as why it is important. This week we are focusing on responsibility. We are discussing with students that responsibility is doing what you are supposed to do when you are supposed to do it. We identified different ways that students are responsible at school ( washing hands, throwing garbage away in the garbage can, using technology appropriately etc.) as well as ways they might be responsible at home (brushing their teeth, taking care of pets, helping with chores). In the upcoming weeks we plan to discuss the following topics:
Week of Feb. 8th- Honesty
Week of Feb. 15th- Initiative
Week of Feb. 22nd- Perseverance
Week of March 1st- Optimism
Thank you in advance for following up and discussing these topics at home.

Picture Day Update
Due to the inclement weather day, our new Picture Day is Thursday February 11, 2021
Picture Re-take day is scheduled for Thursday March 11, 2021
If you would like to order online please visit www.mylifetouch.com
Enter Picture Day ID: EVTTCJHGM to be able to see picture packages and order online, so you don't have to worry about returning anything on Picture Day!
If you have already placed an order online, those orders will still be good for the new picture date. If you are planning on ordering pictures, you can still use the same paper order forms as well.
Valentines Day Parties
Riverside will have Valentine’s day parties this year on Friday February 12, 2021, with a few modifications. We ask that all classroom party treats be commercially prepared, and individually wrapped. Treats must be brought in at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled party.
To limit the sharing of items, this year, we will NOT be exchanging individual Valentines cards from home or bringing in decorated boxes; instead students will create Valentines and kind messages to share with each other in the classrooms.
Watch for more information from your child's teacher about your child's classroom.
Congratulations to our Spelling Bee Winners

Month of Math & The Math Olympics
Your child will bring home a math worksheet to complete as part of our schoolwide “Month of Math” each Monday during February.
The questions will all be grade level specific to review and help prepare our 3-5 grades for the upcoming Forward Exam. Students that complete the sheet and return it to their teacher will be entered into a drawing for some math prizes the following week. These winners will be announced during the morning announcements.
Then, as a grand finale, we’ll be hosting a virtual event on Tuesday, February 23rd at 6:00 that will take the place of our usual Math Olympics. More information will be coming about our virtual event in the near future.
Thank you to the D.C. Everest Education Foundation!
What have your kids been doing in Music?
Enjoy watching our latest videos of our 4th and 5th graders performing! We have not been singing nor playing our recorders in the Music room because of Covid, so I appreciate ALL of their extra effort in learning the recorder and singing from home.

5th Grade Chess Tournament
Fifth grade students have been learning how to play chess this year. As a matter of fact, they have logged hundreds of hours learning the pieces, how to checkmate, and advanced strategies in and out of school. It’s been great to see the excitement and hear students talking about this age-old game that teaches patience, perseverance, problem solving, and lots of humility.
Each quarter, we are going to crown our fifth grade Grandmaster. The second quarter, class winners were:
Berry Homeroom: Henry Powers
Aleckson Homeroom: Garrett Parmer
Lorge/Hanke Homeroom: Mark Mykytsey
Hughes Homeroom: Jabez Duwe
Quarter 2 Grandmaster: Mark Mykytsey
Congratulations everyone!
