For Heaven's Sake
February 2017
From the Principal's Desk
What an incredible, awesome day for Our Lady Queen of Heaven School!! It is a beautiful spring day and the sun is shining down on us. Today, we witnessed what leadership brings to our community and our country. The school played host to Major Roach, City Councilman Mark Eckard and Police Juror and graduate of OLQHS, Nic Hunter. Our students showed their creativity and their knowledge of how individual presidents lead our country through the various challenges that America has faced. It was an astonishing tribute to the United States and our school and local community.
It was also Mardi Gras at OLQHS this afternoon! Our annual kindergarten Mardi Gras parade circled the entire Queen of Heaven block. The kindergartners were amazing in their floats, throwing beads, candy, cups, etc. as they traveled past the FLCC, Villa Maria, the OLQH Rectory, the school, and the ECC. The OLQHS band led the way along with the kindergarten king and queen. It was an exciting day for all who attended.
Thank you to the students, parents and friends who came out to support our school today and these wonderful events! Have a wonderful, safe and restful Mardi Gras break!

8th Graders Visit Sowela!
This year our 8th graders took the ACT Profile to assist them in career planning. Students took a series of inventories that assessed their interests, values, and abilities. Career paths were chosen based on the results from the inventories. Students that scored on the technical side of the ACT Career Map were invited to tour the campus of SOWELA Technical College. Students were able to visit the aviation hanger, nursing, automotive, and welding departments, to name a few. They learned about various jobs and the amount of training each job entails.

3rd grade is moving right along! They are on to fractions in math, and are learning about animals in science to get ready for their upcoming visit to the Houston zoo! They are also preparing for 3rd grade Louisiana Days, which will begin on March 20th, where they will learn all about Louisiana and its culture, which of course includes dancing, and food!!

This is such an exciting time of year. Both the Second Grade and the Fourth Grade made their own wearable Mardi Gras Masks with bright colors, glitter, and feathers.
This is an important reminder: Thursday, March 2 is ARTSONIA T-SHIRT DAY. Find one of your child's most beautiful pictures and buy it on an Artsonia T-Shirt (the Art Department gets 20% of the sale). Wear your shirt proudly with jeans.
Kindergarten designed beautiful Mardi Gras Masks which adorn the hall of the Fine Arts Building. First graders have made beautiful snowmen and are now working on a "new" cover for an "old" Caldecott Award Winning Book. Second graders are finishing their wonderful Emperor Penguins in craypas.
Third graders are working hard on their gourd bugs. I now know where the phrase "cute as a bug" comes from--these bugs are CUTE! Fourth Graders just finished their fantastic Mardi Gras Masks and will begin an art history study on Picasso after the holiday. They will make their own Picasso portrait in craypas.
The Seventh Graders just finished their abstracts in the style of local artist, Jay Bowdon, and Mr. Bowdon has critiqued their work. Parents please go to Artsonia and read Mr. Bowdon's comments on your child's work. He was very impressed. Seventh Grade just finished an art history study on Andy Warhol and will do their own self-portrait in Warhol's style on the Wacom Tablets (on computer) in the Fine Arts PC Lab.
Parents please open and maintain your Artsonia site. Comment on your child's work. Look at the website together, Have Grandma join your fan club. It is a wonderful way to keep up with what they are doing and a great way to encourage them.
Remember we are busy creating, make messing, and having fun,

asbestos statement
Each year parents must be informed that the school has complied with all national standards regarding asbestos on campus. Certain vinyl floors and the panels that are below the quad windows will have to be handled appropriately if ever replaced. Our report indicates that existing asbestos is in good condition and we have the highest rating given. You are welcome to examine the asbestos file in the office if desired.
