Hampton Bays Middle School
Monday Memo #25
CPR
Dear T.E.A.M. :
So this weekend, among other things, I took Parker (our 16 year old daughter) to practice driving. In seemingly unrelated news, I also got re-certified in CPR and first aid, as part of my Little League coaching duties.
Funny to think, while CPR may prove helpful when sitting in the passenger seat while Parker drives, unfortunately I can't administer it to myself.
These two weekend events have me thinking about what happens when we put our kids in the "driver's seat" in our classrooms. It's not always easy. And at first, it may render us feeling "powerless". But there are certainly some unexpected gems that comes of us being courageous to do something like this.
Some of us may recall experimenting with CPR (Circle of Power and Respect) during Advisory. While it's an excellent protocol to use during any 41-minute lesson, why not give it a try this week during Advisory?

The links above includes information and a video that shows how CPR looks. Watch the video and notice, among other things, the teacher's role in the CPR activity, the seating arrangement, and the terrifying yet sweet silence of wait time.
I challenge you to try this. And if you're unsure of how to organize it or get it rolling, feel free to ask me for help. I am more than happy to coordinate a CPR activity for you or with you for Advisory. It'd be fun.
As always, I appreciate all you do, for our middle school students and our program.
Let's have a great week.
Sincerely,
Dennis
