The Walker Talker
Walker Career Center weekly update - September 25, 2020
There's nothing a fresh manicure can't fix!
The ladies in Cosmetology were excited to try out the new PPE shields in class for their manicure lesson this week. The Cosmetology program is comprised of two courses designed to prepare students to meet the requirements to take the Indiana State Cosmetology Board for professional licensing. This includes 1500 clock hours of combined theory and hands on instruction. First-year students will learn the basic fundamentals skills of haircutting, styling, skin care, make-up and basic nail care. Second –year students will learn advance techniques. They will explore the latest trends and techniques in haircutting, coloring, chemical texturizing. They will also learn the professional skills necessary to be successful in a salon setting.
Special Guests visit PCC this week
This week, the freshman counseling team (Ms. Linenberg and Mr. Massey) and academic coach (Mr. Green) got an opportunity to sit down and conduct face to face conferences with students during Prep for College and Careers (PCC). All freshman at Warren Central High School take PCC during first semester so our freshman team is able to utilize this time on a regular basis and work closely with our PCC instructors. We are grateful for all of their support!
From start to finish for this crew
The students in Graphic Design and Imagining were able to finish up their class t-shirt project this week. These individuals begin by creating a design for their class logo, the individuals in the class then have an opportunity to provide feedback on the other individuals design and then they recreate the design based on the feedback. At that point the class votes on a winning design for the front, back, and sleeve to make their class shirt. Students learn the art of creating the design, receiving customer feedback, creating the screen, applying the ink, and proper care for the drying process. Following this project, students will be able to utilize these skills to create their own design and will begin creating their own unique shirts.
Happy Retirement to JB!
It is with great sadness that we announce the retirement of Mrs. Janet Banks from the Walker Career Center at Fall Break. Janet is leaving the Warren Family after spending the last 7 school years with Warren and the last 4.5 at Walker Career Center. While in Warren, Janet worked as the Extended Learning Coordinator for Warren Central and then moved to Walker Career Center where she created our Work & Learn program from scratch. During her time, Janet has been an amazing asset for Walker as she has been able to build strong partnerships with local businesses and agencies that provide our students opportunities to receive job placements within the program they are enrolled in. Through these placements, students are able to get into higher level jobs prior to graduation and several continue employment throughout the summer and post-graduation.
While we are sad to be losing Janet to retirement, we are excited for her to begin this next chapter in her life. Janet loves to travel and is excited to be able to cheer for her Pittsburgh Steelers without all of the grief from the Colts fans in the Walker family.
