Kindergarten Enrollment for 2017-2018 School Year
Do you have a child that will be attending Kindergarten at Harrison Parkway Elementary next school year? If so, you may now enroll your child online. Please click on the link below for more information:
http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/enrollment/kindergarten.aspx
Your child must be 5 years of age on or before August 1st, 2017 in accordance with the guidelines from the Indiana Department of Education in order to register for kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year.
Mark your calendars for our Harrison Parkway Elementary Kindergarten Round-up. It will be held on Thursday April 13th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. During the open-house style event, you will be able to meet our Kindergarten teachers, tour the building, and take a short ride on a school bus!
Neighborhood Bus Safety
Please help communicate to others in the neighborhood about the importance of watching for bus traffic during the morning and afternoon transit hours. While we lead busy lives, it is always good to reflect on the fact that our kids are much more important than getting places quickly. Thank you for remembering to slow down on neighborhood streets and watching for children who are crossing roads to get to and from school!
Music News
Attached is a flyer with information regarding music experiences for students called, Local Vocals. This group is under the leadership of two music educators from Riverside Intermediate who do an excellent job. If your child would enjoy additional music experiences outside of the music classroom here at HPE, take time to look over the attached flyer.
Thank you,
Mrs. Carter

Winter Weather
As colder weather has arrived, please note that students go outside at recess when the temperature (and wind-chill) is 15 degrees or above. It is important that students arrive to school with appropriate dress for the colder weather such as long pants (no shorts), coats, hats, gloves, and/or scarfs. Thank you for double checking that your child is making appropriate clothes choices each day!
Weather Delays and Cancellations
As temperatures and conditions are prone to fluctuate, we encourage families to review their weather plans.
The leadership team at Hamilton Southeastern Schools is doing the same and will examine a combination of factors when considering a delay or closure on inclement weather days. It is not an easy decision. We not only weigh the effect of the temperature on students walking to and standing at bus stops, but we must also think about the predicted snowfall, ice, rain, wind and wind chill etc... Cold temperature and winds can also impact bus engine starts and cause possible delays that can leave students standing longer and in some cases without access to vital school resources. Therefore, we consider each weather situation separately, monitor reports and consult with our transportation department before making a decision.
Hamilton Southeastern Schools is committed to the safety and well-being of all students and endeavors to make decisions regarding delays and closures as early as possible. Please stay tuned to the following sources for the latest weather-related school news:
HSE Skylert
In the event of a delay or cancellation, all families will receive an automated message from HSE Transportation Director Jim White via our Skylert system. The message will arrive by both a phone call and an e-mail. Parents also may opt to receive a text alert through Skyward/Family Access. To login, please click on the following link: https://sis.hse.k12.in.us/scripts/wsisa.dll/WService=wsEAplus/seplog01.w
HSE Social Media
Social media has become our fastest way of sharing school news. Weather-related school updates are available on the HSE Twitter feed and Facebook page. Students, families and residents are encouraged to join our more than 10,000+ “followers” at www.twitter.com/HSESchools and join our Facebook family at www.facebook.com/HSESchools. Not on Twitter or FB? Access both directly from the HSE website at www.hse.k12.in.us.
Local Media Outlets
Television and radio stations remain a traditional way to share school weather announcements. HSE posts school delays and closures to the following media outlets:
- WQME – 98.7 FM
- WHBU-WERK-MAX, WLBC – 104.1 FM
- WEDJ – 107.1 FM Radio Latina
- WIBC – 93.1 FM
- WSYW – 810 AM
- WISH-TV 8
- WXIN (Fox 59 & CW 4)
- WRTV (6)
- WTHR (13)
Two-Hour Delay-- In the event that the school district deems a two hour delay is necessary, school will run from 11am-3:40 am. Breakfast will not be served, but lunch will be served. School doors will be unlocked at 10:45 am. Buses will run 2 hours behind, so if your student normally gets on the bus at 8:30am, then a 2 hour delay means that he/she will get on the bus at 10:30 am.
Before and After School YMCA Program-- The YMCA before and after school program will be open during their regularly scheduled hours on days that Hamilton Southeastern Schools are experience a two-hour delay. When Hamilton Southeastern Schools are closed for weather related issues, the YMCA school care is closed as well.
Notes from the Nurse
As we start the new semester a few health tips:
Fever: If your child has a fever > 100.0, they MUST stay home for 24 hrs fever free without use of fever reducing medicine.
Vomiting: Any student who has vomited due to illness must stay home from school and must be vomit free for 24 hrs before returning to school
Recess: All students are expected to participate in recess each day. District Policy states that the students will go outside if the temperature is above 15 degrees with the wind shield factored in. Students not able to participate may bring a note from home or from their physician. School policy only allows a student to use a note from home for three days, after which the parent note must be replaced by a Dr’s note. Parents need to communicate any recess excuse to the nurse and the teacher.
So PLEASE, dress your child appropriately with coats, hats and mittens. You can take layers off but you can't put them on if you don't have them!
Water! Water! Water!!! Please encourage your child to drink water. It helps rejuvenate and flush the body system, and with the air so dry, it keeps the body hydrated decreasing nose bleeds. Also, please remind your child to take the time to wash their hands thoroughly! It truly helps stop germs from spreading.
Accidents happen during the day that sometimes require a change of clothes. Because we have a limited supply of clothes in the clinic, please consider packing extra clothes in your child's backpack for those mishaps. If there is no extra clothing to fit a child in need, a phone call may be made to parents requesting a change of clothes be brought in. Thank you for your help!

HPE PROCEDURES
HPE Cafeteria News
When sending lunch money for your child please put it in an envelope with your child's name, student ID number, and teacher.
Please remember to check your child's lunch balance. You can sign up for email alerts for low balances. HSE’s debit policy allows students to go into the negative -$5.00 before receiving a debit meal (choice of Turkey Sandwich or PBJ, strawberry applesauce, and milk).
If school is on a two hour delay, we will not be serving breakfast to students-- this includes students that participate in the morning YMCA program.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
--- Mrs. Berling, Food Services Manager
Lunch with Students
If you are interested in having lunch with your student, you must call the office at 915-4210 before 9:30 am the day of your visit. We can only accommodate 10 visitors each day, so reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Also, you must have a current background check on file with the school. You are welcome to order a school lunch, bring a sack lunch, or you can just sit and visit. Please do not bring fast food or soda, due to various student allergies. Per HSE Policy, pictures of students are not allowed to be taken in the cafeteria and please do not use cell phones during lunch. Thank you for supporting these policies.
Attendance Line Voicemail
If your child will be absent from school, please call the HPE Attendance Line by 9:00 a.m. at 915-4210. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, you may call the attendance line's voicemail anytime and leave a message. If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
Volunteering and the Background Check Process
Parents/visitors to HPE must have a background check on file with the school (including watching the anti-bullying video and completing the video survey) in order to volunteer in the school or to have lunch with a student. The link for the background check information can be found on link below at: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/parents/volunteering.aspx
The background checks are conducted by a 3rd party company, and there is a $13.00 fee for processing (payable online at the time of the application). Once completed, approved background checks are valid for a period of 3 years. As a new feature this year, applicants will be notified via email when their background check has been completed and they will also notify people 30 days before their background check expires.
Transportation Change During the Day
Occasionally, parents must make unplanned transportation changes during the school day. All telephone calls must be received by 2:00PM. This is to allow enough time to accurately deliver messages to teachers, as well as time to confirm the change if necessary. Please do not call the school after 2:00PM to make a transportation change except in the case of extreme emergencies.
