We are excited to announce our free, high-quality summer learning opportunities for HPS students who will be entering grades 1-9 in Fall 2019. The programs run from July 8th- August 9th with a focus on academics, arts and enrichment as well as field trips and fun Friday activities. HOLYOKE PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAS BEEN AWARDED AN FY19 TEACHER DIVERSIFICATION PILOT PROGRAM GRANT OF $340,980!
The Teacher Diversification Pilot Program grant funds will be used to support educators in the Holyoke Public Schools that are interested in becoming licensed teachers and commit to teaching in Holyoke. The funds will subsidize college tuition and provide technology and other resources to assist in their preparation. In addition, some funds will support our summer learning program by compensating Teach Western Mass Residents to train as teachers while working with students. CHAIRS OF THE JOINT COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION VISITED HPS
Chairs of the Joint Committee on Education for the Commonwealth, Senator Jason M. Lewis, and Representative Alice Hanlon Peisch visited Donahue School last week where they observed the Vacation Academies and then participated in a luncheon discussion at Peck School. School Committee Vice Chair, Mildred Lefebvre, Irene Feliciano-Sims, Dennis Birks and Rosalee Tensley Williams attended along with Devin Sheehan, who led the discussion regarding the proposed Middle Schools. City Council members Gladys Lebron-Martinez, Terrence Murphy and Michael Sullivan also participated in the discussion along with State Representative Aaron Vega and members of the Holyoke Public Schools staff. Additionally, HTA President Pete McAndrew participated in the visit at Donahue School. We would like to thank our visitors and attendees for their genuine interest in learning more about our progress and the many challenges that still remain.

Administrative Professionals Day was April 24th. We would like to thank the many talented administrative assistants who work across the Holyoke Public Schools. We are grateful for all that you do for our schools and families!
UPCOMING MIDDLE SCHOOL OPTIONS INFORMATION SESSION!
Come join us at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holyoke on Tuesday, May 21st from 5pm-6pm and learn about all of the middle school options for students from grades 4-8!
Representatives from STEM, Veritas, Summit Learning at Peck and Metcalf will be there to talk to families. Snacks will be provided.
VACATION ACADEMY NEWS
The HPS Vacation Academy that took place last week was a success!
Students who attended the program at the Donahue School site every day received a certificate of attendance that also serves as verification that the student will receive a Season Pass to Six Flags. The passes for these students with perfect attendance will be delivered to their schools by June 1, 2019.
At Donahue School, students in grades 2-5 participated in the “Camp Inventions” Academy, which is a nationally acclaimed program. There were approximately 110 participants who had the opportunity to explore the connections between science, technology, engineering, and innovation. There were approximately 50 students in grades 5-8 who participated in an Honors Arts program held in conjunction with ENCHANTED CIRCLE. They experienced Digital Media, Musical Theater, 2D/3D Visual Arts, Latin and Caribbean Dance, Bucket Drumming and the opportunity for outdoor sports and cooperative group games.
At Holyoke High School, the Vacation Academy provided students an opportunity to prepare for the 2019 Math or Science MCAS and to continue towards academic success in high school. The Academy took place Tuesday through Thursday and 60 students participated.
EMPLOYEE EXCELLENCE - THIS WEEK’S CONES FOR EXCELLENCE IN BUILDING STUDENT PATHWAYS RECOGNITION – RYAN DEARING (KELLY SCHOOL)
This week’s Cones for Excellence recognition was presented to Ryan Dearing (counselor at Kelly School). Mr. Deering is such a reflective learner, always trying to improve his craft on behalf of his students. He always asks for feedback and has grown so much as a counselor and leader at Kelly School.
In the Holyoke Public Schools, we are recognizing one educator a week who is working hard to build and grow our students’ ability to: effectively communicate, think critically, productively engage as community members and become mindful individuals (from our graduate profile). We are surprising a deserving HPS educator with a construction cone that displays the words: “Awesome”, “Well Done”, and “Great Job”. KELLY SCHOOL RECIPIENT OF COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP AWARD
The Holyoke Boys and Girls Club presented the 2019 Community Partnership Award on April 11th to the Dr. Marcella R. Kelly School! The annual award is presented to an individual or organization that demonstrates an exemplary partnership. The award recognizes the dedication of Holyoke Public School administration, teachers, staff and especially the students of Dr. Marcella R. Kelly school for their support in empowering our youth to become caring, responsible citizens.
News Briefs
HHS senior Katrina Lopez has been selected as the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holyoke’s 2019 Youth of the Year for her outstanding contributions to her family, school, community, and The Club. She will participate in and be honored at the state competition in May. Congratulations to Katrina for being recognized with the highest honor a Club member can receive.
Congratulations to HHS student Darius Diaz. He has been selected for the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches All-Academic Team.
WSU and Ethnic Studies Connect - 8th-grade Ethnic Studies students joined some 11th and 12th-grade Ethnic Studies students on a brilliant field experience at Westfield State University where they engaged in deep research and problem solving while honing tools towards action and social change. For example, students from Peck shared the brilliant idea of reclaiming spaces in Holyoke. Justin Escalante 12th-grade Ethnic Studies Leadership Student at HHS who attended the event stated, "Wow, I am amazed by these 8th graders. I could have never spoken like that when I was in 8th grade--I can't even speak like that now and I am about to go to college. How cool that they get to begin this type of critical thinking in middle school."
9th and 10th-grade students at HHS were treated to the Classic Repertory Theater's performance of George Orwell's Animal Farm today. We would like to thank Friends of Holyoke Public Schools, Mass Cultural Council, and the Holyoke Local Cultural Council for their support.

April 25th - Heart of Holyoke Student Art Show Opening - The Annual Heart of Holyoke Art Show’s opening reception will take place from 6-7:30 PM at the Holyoke Visitors Center at Heritage State Park (221 Appleton Street). If you can’t make it to the opening reception, please visit the show during the Visitors Center’s operating hours to view the talented masterpieces created by HPS students. The art will be displayed until May 15th.
April 25th - School Building Advisory Committee (LAWRENCE SCHOOL) Meeting, HHS Dean Campus Tea Room, 5:30 PM, 1045 Main Street
April 25th - Holyoke Educational Equity Coalition Meeting, 5-7 PM, Enlace de Familias, 299 Main Street - This conversation will be framed by the documentary Seeing RED, a film which highlights the racial and ethnic disparities within the juvenile justice system in Massachusetts. This conversation will happen in two parts. The first part will be held this Thursday at 5 pm at Enlace and the second on May 30th at Enlace.
April 27th - Parent Power - Math Carnival - Empowering Our Children’s Math Learning – 10AM-2PM, Holyoke High School North (500 Beech Street) - This event is open to all HPS families. Lunch, raffles, and transportation will be provided. Fun-filled educational activities include a Robot-Themed Escape Room, a Slime Room, virtual reality, a STEM Room, and light breakfast! April 30th - Holyoke Transitions Academy Ribbon Cutting, 4-5 PM, 4 Open Square Way - The Holyoke Transitions Academy has moved to a new location. Come celebrate! Please RSVP to Kelsey Poole, Transitions Specialist, at kpoole@hps.holyoke.ma.us. - Call for Donations: Students in the Holyoke Transitions Academy are creating vision boards for a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. They are in need of some magazines for this project. If you have some to spare, please deliver them to 57 Suffolk Street, Attention: Transitions Academy. They will be accepting donations through April 26th.
May 1st - Junior College Planning Night at 6:30 PM at Holyoke High School North's Auditorium
May 2nd - Pa'lante Hidden Legends- Pa'lante will make history as they unveil the new Paper City Hidden Legends exhibit and honor their first 25 inductees 5:30-6:30 PM at Holyoke High School North.
May 3rd - Announcing the return of the National Players to Holyoke. A family friendly, multi-media stage presentation, now touring the country! Coming to the Peck School Auditorium for one show only at 7:00 PM.
May 3rd - The Holyoke High School Ethnic Studies Program Ethnic Studies is excited to invite you to the first ever Ethnic Studies Pop Out: A Block Party! This event seeks to celebrate and bring awareness to Ethnic Studies in our schools and community. It will take place from 6-9 PM at Holyoke High School North (500 Beech St, Holyoke, MA 01040). There will be food, performances and a number of activities. We hope you can join us!
June 19th - Last Day of School - If there are no other cancellations, the last day of school will be June 19th. It will be an early release day. Students will be released three hours earlier than normal. ¡LAS ESCUELAS PÚBLICAS DE HOLYOKE GANARON EL PROGRAMA DE PILOTO DE DIVERSIFICACIÓN PARA PROFESORES DE FY19 DE $ 340,980!

PRESIDENTES DEL COMITÉ CONJUNTO DE EDUCACIÓN VISITARON A HPS

NOTICIAS DE LA ACADEMIA DE VACACIONES
¡La Academia de Vacaciones de HPS que tuvo lugar la semana pasada fue un éxito!he HPS!
Los estudiantes que asistieron al programa en la Escuela Donahue todos los días recibieron un certificado de asistencia que también sirve como verificación de que el estudiante recibirá un Pase de Temporada para Six Flags. Los pases para estos estudiantes con asistencia perfecta se entregarán a sus escuelas antes del 1 de junio de 2019.
En la Escuela Donahue, los estudiantes de 2º a 5º grado participaron en la Academia "Campo de Invenciones", que es un programa reconocido a nivel nacional. Hubo aproximadamente 110 participantes que tuvieron la oportunidad de explorar las conexiones entre ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería e innovación. Había aproximadamente 50 estudiantes en los grados 5-8 que participaron en un programa de Honores Artes que se llevó a cabo en conjunto con el ENCHANTED CIRCLE (CÍRCULO ENCANTADO). Experimentaron Medios Digitales, Teatro Musical, Artes Visuales 2D / 3D, Danza Latina y Caribeña, Tambores de Cubo y la oportunidad de practicar deportes al aire libre y juegos de grupos cooperativos.
En la Escuela Holyoke High, la Academia de Vacaciones les brindó a los estudiantes la oportunidad de prepararse para el MCAS de Matemáticas o Ciencias 2019 y continuar hacia el éxito académico en la escuela secundaria. La Academia se llevó a cabo de martes a jueves y participaron 60 estudiantes.
EXCELENCIA PARA EMPLEADOS - LOS CONOS DE ESTA SEMANA PARA LA EXCELENCIA EN RECONOCIMIENTO DE LA CONSTRUCCIÓN DE VÍAS DE ESTUDIANTES - RYAN DEARING (LA ESCUELA KELLY)
El reconocimiento de Cones for Excellence de esta semana se presentó a Ryan Dearing (consejero en la Escuela Kelly). El Sr. Deering es un aprendiz tan reflexivo, siempre tratando de mejorar su oficio en nombre de sus estudiantes. Él siempre pide comentarios y ha crecido tanto como consejero y líder en la Escuela Kelly.

NOTICIAS BREVES
Katrina López, estudiante de 12º grado en HHS, ha sido seleccionada como la Joven del Año 2019 del Boys and Girls Club de Greater Holyoke por sus destacadas contribuciones a su familia, la escuela, la comunidad y el Club. Ella participará y será honrada en la competencia estatal en mayo. Felicitaciones a Katrina por ser reconocida con el honor más alto que un miembro del Club puede recibir.
Felicitaciones al estudiante de HHS Darius Díaz. Ha sido seleccionado para el Equipo Todo-Académico de los Entrenadores de Baloncesto de Massachusetts.
WSU y Ethnic Studies Connect: los estudiantes de 8º grado de Estudios étnicos se unieron a algunos de los estudiantes de Estudios étnicos de 11º y 12º grado en una brillante experiencia de campo en la Universidad Estatal de Westfield, donde realizaron investigaciones profundas y resolvieron problemas al tiempo que perfeccionaba herramientas para la acción y el cambio social. Nunca podría haber hablado así cuando estaba en 8º grado; ni siquiera puedo hablar como eso ahora y estoy a punto de ir a la universidad. Los estudiantes de noveno y décimo grado en HHS fueron invitados a la presentación del Teatro de Repertorio Clásico de la Granja de Animales de George Orwell. 25 de abril - La Muestra De Arte De Heart Of Holyoke (Corazón De Holyoke) De Estudiantes Abre El 25 De Abril - La recepción inaugural de la Exposición Anual de Arte de Heart of Holyoke (Corazón de Holyoke) se llevará a cabo el jueves 25 de abril de 6 a 7:30 pm en el Centro de Visitantes de Holyoke en el Heritage State Park (221 de la calle Appleton). Si no puede asistir a la recepción de apertura, visite el programa durante las horas de operación del Centro de Visitantes para ver las obras maestras con talento creadas por los estudiantes de HPS. El arte se exhibirá hasta el 15 de mayo.
25 de abril - Reunión De Coalición De Equidad Educacional, 5 PM a 7 PM, Enlace de Familias, 299 de la calle Main - Esta conversación estará enmarcada en el documental Seeing RED, una película que destaca las disparidades raciales y étnicas dentro del sistema de justicia juvenil en Massachusetts. Esta conversación sucederá en dos partes. La primera parte se llevará a cabo este jueves a las 5 pm en Enlace y la segunda el 30 de mayo en Enlace.
27 de abril - Poder De Los Padres - Carnaval De Matemáticas - Apoyando El Aprendizaje De Nuestros Niños, 10 AM a 2PM, Escuela Holyoke High Campus Norte (500 de la calle Beech) - Este evento está abierto a todas las familias de HPS. Se proveerá almuerzo, rifas y transporte. Las actividades educativas llenas de diversión incluyen una sala de escape con temática de robots, una sala de limo, realidad virtual, una sala STEM y un desayuno ligero. 30 de abril - Corte De Cinta De La Academia De Transiciones De Holyoke, 4 a 5 PM, 4 Open Square Way - La Academia de Transiciones de Holyoke se ha mudado a una nueva ubicación. ¡Ven a celebrar! Por favor confirme su asistencia a Kelsey Poole, especialista en transiciones, en kpoole@hps.holyoke.ma.us. - Convocatoria de donaciones: los estudiantes de Holyoke Transitions Academy están creando tablas de visión para una ceremonia de corte de cinta. Necesitan algunas revistas para este proyecto. Si tiene algunos de sobra, envíalos a 57 de la calle Suffolk, Atención: Academia de Transiciones. Estarán aceptando donaciones hasta el 26 de abril. La Academia de Transiciones de Holyoke está diseñada para preparar a los estudiantes, de 18 a 22 años de edad con discapacidades, para el cambio de estado de un estudiante a un rol emergente de adulto. Nos centramos en varias facetas de la vida, incluido el empleo, la educación postsecundaria (es decir, los académicos funcionales, la universidad, la capacitación), el mantenimiento de un hogar, la participación en la comunidad según corresponda individualmente y la mejora de las relaciones sociales y personales satisfactorias. La Academia actualmente atiende a 30 estudiantes del distrito escolar de HPS.

2 de mayo - Pa'lante Leyendas Ocultas- Pa'lante hará historia al presentar la nueva exhibición de Exhibición de Leyendas Ocultas de la Ciudad de Papel y honrará a sus primeros 25 miembros de 5:30 PM a 6:30 PM en la Escuela Holyoke High Campus Norte
3 de mayo - El Programa de Estudios Étnicos de Holyoke High School North se complace en invitarte al evento Pop Out de Estudios Étnicos: ¡Una fiesta en bloque! Este evento busca celebrar y traer conciencia a los estudios étnicos en nuestra comunidad. Tomará lugar el 3 de mayo de 2019 de 6-9 PM en Holyoke High School North (500 Beech St, Holyoke, MA 01040). 19 de junio, Último Día De Clases - Si no hay otras cancelaciones, el último día de clases será el 19 de junio. Será un día de salida temprana. Los estudiantes saldrán tres horas antes de lo normal.
