What are we Learning?
Reading - We have completed our Nonficition Reading Unit. This week we will enjoy reading and responding to some traditional Holiday literature. This will prepare us for our Fiction unit when we return in January!
Please continue to encourage your child to read their library books and take AR tests here at school! Weekly progress reports for AR will be sent home in your child's Friday folder. This is a great way to encourage and monitor independent reading!
Phonics/Spelling - Unit 7 is three weeks long and will continue after winter break. We will begin with learning about open syllables, y as a vowel, and more suffixes.
Trick Words (Unit 7): eight, large, change, city, every, family, night, carry, something
Writing - As our informational writing unit winds down, students will focus in on writing a Holiday Informational Writing piece. Students will get the option to write their piece digitally or traditionally. We will research how to's and holiday facts to make our informational books. We hope to share these in January!
Math - I am amazed at how quickly we are catching on to counting money and telling time. We will continue to practice those skills this week and finish the week by taking our Unit 2 assessment. This grade will be reflected on your child's 2nd quarter report card.
IXL Topics - We will also work on these topics at school! :)
Money
P.3 Count Money - pennies, nickles, dimes
P.4 Count Money - Up to $1
P.5 Count Money - Up to $5 (careful dollar coins and half dollars are used)
Social Studies - For our remaining December weeks, we will study Holidays around the world. Our Holiday folders will come home at the end of this unit.
Additional Homework - Some parents inquired about additional homework for more practice throughout the week. If you'd like your child to practice some additional skills please encourage them in the following ways:
Reading Tic-Tac-Toe - Pick up a Tic-Tac-Toe Reading board here at school. After you've read a book, or a chapter of a book complete one of the activities on the board. This is a great way to boost reading comprehension. You can use your Reading Log books, library books, whatever works!
IXL Topics - Visit our IXL website and continuing practicing all 2nd grade math skills. Feel free to email Mrs. Mack for suggested topics.
Math Fact Practice - Use apps and websites to practice math fact fluency! ABCYA.com is a great resource or simply search your App Store for "math fact practice".
Hope this helps!
