2019-2020 Science Curriculum Updates
As a reminder, resources to the current science curriculum are being added throughout the year.
Teachers should check Schoology Groups for updates and alerts when new resources have been added.
These resources are being developed to (1) support teachers’ background knowledge, (2) provide guidance on sequence and selection of learning events and (3) enhance inquiry-based learning and highlight the science and engineering practices.
Examples of these resources are linked below:
Opportunity to be a part of Innovation Squads
The Office of Planning, Innovation and Accountability is seeking teachers and specialists interested in pursuing innovation in support of the school division’s Graduate Profile to serve as members of school-based innovation squads. The idea of innovation squads emerged from the partnership between Virginia Beach City Public Schools and 2Revolutions, an educational design lab. Through this partnership, prototyping networks were convened during the 2018-2019 school year and created potential solutions for the identified challenge of developing the mindsets necessary to support transformation. One of the solutions identified through the prototyping process was the development of innovation squads – individual or teams of teachers/specialists interested in receiving support and resources to implement an innovative idea for providing the types of learning experiences that would help students acquire the attributes in the Graduate Profile. A very small test of this prototype occurred during the 2018-2019 school year with a few selected teachers (visit this link to learn more).
We are currently working to scale the innovation squads throughout the division by launching a smaller test of the squads during the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. To do this, we are extending the opportunity divisionwide through an application process. Selected teachers/specialists will receive job-embedded support from a central support staff member and may also receive some funds to implement or incubate their ideas. In return for receiving support and resources, squad members must be willing to complete a pre- and post-experience survey, meet with the central support staff member to review progress, receive ongoing support, and share their learnings.
Applications may be submitted by individuals or teams of teachers/specialists. All applications must be signed by the building principal and submitted no later than Friday, Jan. 31. Applicants and their principals will be notified as to whether they have been selected for this opportunity by Wednesday, Feb. 12.
Teachers and specialists interested in applying for this opportunity should complete the Intent to Innovate form and submit it to Lisa Banicky, executive director of planning, innovation and accountability, no later than Friday, Jan. 31. If there are any questions about the application process, please contact Lisa Banicky at lisa.banicky@vbschools.com or via telephone at 263-1109.
