Responsible Decision Making:
Analyze Situations & Consider Options
Students encounter all kinds of problems everyday in a variety of contexts-sports, academics and personal and without the tools to overcome these obstacles, they may become overwhelmed or avoid certain challenging situations. One 2010 study found that kids who lack problem-solving skills may be at a higher risk of depression and suicidality.
S.O.D.A.S. is an acronym for a simple problem-solving method that is easy for youth to learn and use. It can be taught using role playing or applying it to situations youth see characters facing in television programs. It is often best understood when a child or teen uses it immediately after being involved in a situation in which they got into trouble or faced an outcome that they were not happy with.
SODAS stands for:
S = Situation
O = Options
D = Disadvantages
A = Advantages
S = Solution
Help children make good choices| Decision Making skill (SODAS Method) https://youtu.be/K-SeO-aT2i8
The first step, as discussed last week, is identifying the problem. Next, analyze the situation to find the underlying cause and create a list. Ask yourself, what things could be responsible for causing the problem? Then, consider your OPTIONS to solve the problem, and make a list of both good and bad ones. The child is encouraged to list at least three options that could be considered for handling this situation. For example:
Option 1: I could punch Jimmy when he calls me a name.
Option 2: I could go and tell my teacher that Jimmy called me a name.
Option 3: I could ignore it and go find someone else to hang out with.
The following worksheet is a guide to the SODAS method of problem solving . https://suebadeau.webs.com/SODAS.pdf
Coming next week: Options: Advantages and Disadvantages

Perseverance
Our theme for this month is Perseverance! Perseverance is that drive that helps you keep working even when you want to quit.
Example: You’re doing school work and it’s your hardest subject. Maybe it is a hard math problem, or a long essay, or maybe you have to stand up in front of the class and present. Whatever it is for you, it’s tough. You are struggling. Maybe you even want to give up but you know the work needs to get done and you know you have to do your best work. So you try harder. You stick with it and after some frustration and focus, you do it!! You got it done and did it to the best of your ability.
