Week of May 20, 2019
Readers' Workshop~
- To reinforce our skills in learning how to determine a character's traits, we read and discussed Sanji and the Baker. As we read the story, we noted and discussed the main characters words, actions, and thoughts. Then, we determined words to best describe the character ~ the character's traits.
- Since we will be researching and writing about the Rainforest during Writers' Workshop, we read and discussed Come on Into the Rainforest.
- During Readers' Workshop, we worked with a new reading partner and began to read another book from the same book series. As we read, we are doing a "Stop and Jot" to write down important story details, words, and characters. We are also discussing the character traits of the story characters taking time to notice how the characters change and stay the
Writers' Workshop~
- As writers, we are research and learning about the Rain Forest. We will begin to write information about the four layers of the rain forest as we learn about them.
- We also wrote detailed sentences about the butterfly's life cycle. We documented our observations as well as responded to comprehension questions outlining the newfound information we discovered.
- During Grammar, we played a Contraction Game. We worked with partners to write the contraction for two words that were listed on a game card. Then, we used an iPad to scan the card and determine if we wrote the contraction correctly.
Mathematicians~
- As mathematicians, we learned how to subtract double digit numbers using the Trade First Method.
- To help us with subtraction, we practiced our Place Value skills as well as our skills with writing number in Expanded Form.
- We also learned more about representing money in two different ways. For example, sixty six cents can be represented with 2 quarters, a dime, a nickel, and 1 penny or I can represent sixty-six cents with 6 dimes and 6 pennies.
Science~
- We released our Painted Lady Butterflies into the school garden. The butterflies loved the butterfly bush as well as flying free across the field. Be sure to check out our photos below!
- As Entomologists, we completed our Butterfly packet.We illustrated and wrote about the different stages of the Butterfly's Life Cycle.
- To reinforce our skills with learning about soil and plants, we planted brassica seeds and marigold seeds. Stay tuned for our sprouting plant news!
Social Studies~
- We completed a Scholastic News about Orangutans. We learned that some orangutans go to school to learn how to survive in the wild. We also learned that orangutans are an endanger species.
- To help us learn more about different types of jobs, we had a few more parents come in and share information about their careers. Be sure to check out our presenters below.
Other Activities~
- Congratulations to Charlie McGroarty ~ our Open-Minded Word of the Month Award Winner!!!
- We attended a School Community Meeting!
- Congratulations to our Typing Agent Masters Award Winners: Weston Schaeffer, Sara Guveiyian, Katie Kubikian, Charlie McGroarty, and Michael Pagliaro!!
- To celebrate Grandfriends' Day, we welcomed Grandparents to visit our classroom and spend some time with us!
