JA DAY IS COMING TO AVALON
Junior Achievement’s mission is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed. The inspiration piece comes from community volunteers who not only deliver JA's lessons, but share their personal experience. In the process, these volunteers serve as role models helping to positively impact young people’s perceptions about the importance of education, as well as critical life skills.
ALL of Avalon's K-3 classrooms will experience a fun, age appropriate way to increase their knowledge of money, spending & saving, personal finance, work and career-readiness, and entrepreneurship. The goal is for them to enjoy a day of an enriched learning experience that will help them make the connection between what they learn in school and the world outside the classroom.
We are excited to have Junior Achievement back in the building!
EAGLES HELPING EAGLES
NURSE'S CORNER
It's very important that students have at least one well-fitting mask in their backpack at all times as well as the mask they are wearing to school that day. Masks get dirty, break, or are lost and an extra one is oftentimes necessary to finish out the school day. Students need to be wearing their masks on the school bus, daycare bus or van, and while exiting parent vehicles as they are dropped off to school in the morning. Please remember to wash fabric masks daily.
If you have your child rapid tested, it must be on days 3-5 of their symptoms to be considered accurate. Testing should also occur in front of a proctor like a doctor, telehealth specialist, or pharmacist to be valid.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
October is National Bullying Prevention Month
What is Bullying?
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, bullying behavior might include assault, tripping, intimidation, rumor spreading and isolation, demands for money, destruction of property, theft of valued possessions, destruction of another’s work, and name-calling. Bullying involves an individual or a group repeatedly harming another person—physically (e.g. tripping, punching or pushing), verbally (e.g. teasing or name-calling), or socially (e.g. ostracizing or spreading hurtful rumors in person or online)
At Avalon, a part of being SAFE, RESPECTFUL, AND RESPONSIBLE means teaching our students about bullying before it starts! The videos, games, and books featured in the link below are ways you can encourage those conversations with your children at home.
Avalon students are upstanders who stop bullying.
1. Be a Buddy - Respect others’ differences and help others to respect differences. It’s cool for people to be different – that’s what makes all of us unique.
2. Interrupt - Help others who are being bullied. Be a friend, even if this person is not yet your friend. Go over to him. Let him know how you think he is feeling.
3. Speak Out - Refuse to be a “bystander”. If you see friends or classmates laughed at by the bully, tell them to stop. Stop untrue or harmful messages from spreading. Think about how you would feel if someone spread an untrue rumor about you.
4. Report to an Adult - Tell an adult at school: teacher, school counselor, principal so that the bullying can stop. It’s not tattling, it’s helping to keep everyone safe.
OCTOBER 23 - 31 IS RED RIBBON WEEK
Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness program. Celebrate Red Ribbon Week in your community and raise awareness of living a drug free life. Take the opportunity to talk to your kids about drugs.
In many communities the celebration has turned into a variety of activities implemented throughout the month of October. These activities are meant to demonstrate the importance of making healthy and smart decisions throughout life so that your dreams and goals can be achieved.
“I pledge to stay in school and learn the things that I need to know.”
“I pledge to make the world a better place for kids like me to grow.”
“I pledge to keep my dreams alive and be all that I can be.”
“I pledge to help others and to keep myself drug free.”

TRICK-OR-TREAT
Keep in mind the following safety tips:
- Adults should accompany young children and older kids should travel in groups.
- Children should wear light colored clothing short enough to prevent tripping. Adding reflective tape to costumes and outer garments will increase visibility.
- Carry and use flashlights or glow sticks after dark.
- Visit homes you know and stay within your neighborhood. Together with your child, map out a safe route so you know where they will be.
- Remind children not to take short cuts through backyards, alleys or fields.
- Remind children never to enter a stranger’s house or vehicle.
- Encourage neighborhood block watches and citizens’ groups to patrol the neighborhood.
- Drive slowly and schedule trips so as to avoid the times of heavy pedestrian traffic.
- Discourage children from eating their treats until they get home.
- Closely check all treats at home is a well-lit place. Remove all opened candies or treats not in their original wrappers. Inspect all fruit and homemade goodies.
- Report any suspicious or criminal activity to the police immediately.

AUDUBON'S TRICK OR TWEET
Join the Grange Insurance Audubon Center for some not-so-scary fun!
Spook up some fun with this not-so-scary nature themed, family fun, fall celebration! Enjoy crafts, games, a scavenger hunt, a short hike and meet some animal friends. Children (and parents, too) are encouraged to come in costume for a fun costume parade during the event. Be sure to stop by story time where you can listen to some fun stories in the Audubon library. And, don't forget to pick up your special treat, as you leave the event, to enjoy when you get home. A few stations will be set up inside the building and other stations and activities will occur outside to make sure everyone can stay safe and socially distanced during the event.
Masks are required for all guests over the age of 2.
This event is recommended for families with toddlers, preschoolers and/or school-aged children up to 2nd grade.
