Saint Michael Saints high school basketball team had a grueling week- three games in three days!
by Phil Leggiere
The Saint Michael Saints High school basketball team had a grueling week, traveling three successive days for away games with tough opponents.
The Saints started their week on Tuesday January 7 facing the Berkshire Arts and Technology (BART) Charter Public School (BART) of North Adams, Mass., an offensive powerhouse the team simply couldn't keep up, losing by a lopsided 83-26. Top scorer for the Saints was Stephen Borst with eight points, followed by Thomas Duchaney and Jason Borst with six points each.
The following day, Wednesday January 8 the Saints made their way to The Putney School in Putney, Vermont, where the team brought a stronger game, particularly on defense.
In a more evenly matched contest, the Saints kept the score tight, within single digit margins through much of the game. Unfortunately, the Saints’ strong defensive play was not matched on offense as the team missed many shots, going down to a 39-24 loss, with Thomas Duchaney contributing 10 points.
On Thursday January 9 the Saints closed out a long week with a trek to the White Oak School in Westfield, Massachusetts. In their best effort of the week the Saints led through most of the game, powered by stellar offensive performances from Michael Kelliher, who hit for 19 points and Thomas Duchaney, who chipped in 14 more points.
The Saints ultimately came up short, however. In a frantic finish White Oak tied up the game in the final two minutes, sending it into overtime where the Saints were overtaken in a heartbreaking 53- 50 loss.
Next week the Saints will be back in action, traveling to Eagle Hill School in Hardwick, Massachusetts on Tuesday January 14 and then facing The Greenwood School at home on Wednesday January 15.
