St. Mike's Matters - Notes

November 17, 2022

Donuts and Deliveries

You may be receiving an "ask" to help with the return of donuts after Sunday Masses. Please say "yes" to helping out with this effort to build fellowship and a connection to our school. If you are not contacted (this is primarily going to 4th and 8th grade families) and would like to participate, please let Mary Sherman or Kim DeBord know. You can email me, and I'll pass it along: krafferty@stmikesolympia.org. This would count towards the commitment of time needed to maintain Partner in the Mission status for in-parish tuition.

If your family does work a Sunday Mass to prepare donuts and coffee, please have your student wear his or her uniform. That earns them a free dress day at school!

Also, many, many thanks for all your donations to our Thanksgiving baskets. The boxes are full to overflowing and St. Michael generosity is obvious and appreciated. Gather your family and plan to pick up a basket this Friday and deliver it to a needy family. Recipients have been pre-screened for safety and need. This is truly a chance to put faith in action and model for the children what it means to really be a disciple.

No Pizza Wednesday - 11/23/22 is a half day!

Morning Drop Off and Cold Weather Clothing

Just a reminder to keep your children in the car if you arrive at morning drop-off before 7:45, as there is no adult supervision until that time.

Also, as the weather is getting colder, please make sure that your children are dressed appropriately for outdoor play. Warm coats, hats and gloves/mittens allow the kids to stay warm and enjoy their outdoor recess time.

Thank you!

High School Placement Test - Pope John Paul II High School

Saturday, December 3rd | 9am-12:15pm | Pope John Paul II High School

The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is a standardized test administered to 8th graders that helps schools know where to place students academically when they enter high school. The HSPT can be shared with any school that accepts the test regardless of where it was proctored. We will be hosting a Prospective Parent Information Session during the first hour of the HSPT for parents and guardians in the JPII Commons.

The cost for the test is $30, however, if this fee presents a hardship for your family, please contact Monica Davis at mdavis@popejp2hseagles.org for a waiver.

What Is A Birthday Book?

Birthday books are added to the collection at St. Michael School library in honor of someone's birthday. Any student can select a book from the collection of new books waiting to be added to our library. The book will be presented at Monday Morning Opening and the birthday boy or girl will be the first person to check out the book!

If you would like to celebrate your student's birthday by donating a birthday book, please complete the form. A $5.00 donation is requested to help defray the cost of the book. Please check if you want your FACTS account charged or you can send in cash or check (payable to St. Michael School and marked "birthday book" on the memo line). If the cost is prohibitive, please contact Mrs. Quebedeaux (school librarian) squebedeaux@stmikesolympia.org, as we do not want any child to be excluded who wishes to participate.

A special Birthday Club bookplate will be printed and placed inside the book cover with your child's name and year the book was donated.

Library Volunteers Needed

Our school library is currently looking for volunteers. If you are interested in helping out or have questions regarding volunteering, please email Sandra Quebedeaux at: squebedeaux@stmikesolympia.org

St. Michael Parish School Covid-19 Policy (Updated 11/1/22)

If a student or staff member is ill or COVID-19 positive:

Students and staff who have symptoms of COVID-19 are required to stay home and should get

tested. Any student or staff member who tests positive for COVID-19 is required to isolate at

home. Individuals may return to school on Day 6, if they have no symptoms and test negative

on that day (If there are symptoms, Day 0 is the first day of symptoms. Day 1 is the first full day

after symptoms developed. If there are no symptoms, Day 0 is the date being tested. Day 1 is

the first full day after the specimen was collected for a positive test.). If the individual tests

positive on Day 6, the individual is likely still contagious, and should continue to isolate and wait

24-48 hours to test again. If the individual tests negative on two sequential tests each

performed 24-48 hours apart and has no symptoms, the individual can end isolation and return

to school.

If a student or staff member is exposed to COVID-19:

The Department of Health no longer requires exposed students and staff to quarantine. To

protect the school, students and staff, regardless of vaccination status, who are potentially

exposed to COVID-19 should:

  • Monitor for symptoms, AND
  • Test as soon as possible after exposure and then repeat testing every 24-48 hours through at least the first 5 days after exposure AND
  • Wear a well-fitting mask for 10 days after exposure.

COVID-19 positive cases and exposure cases need to be reported to the St. Michael Health

Office (rfeldmann@stmikesolympia.org). COVID-19 testing is available through the Health Office, if home testing is not available.

New loss of taste or smell

Sore throat

Congestion or runny nose

Nausea or vomiting
