Fulton Focus

For the parents and patrons of the Fulton School District

March 3, 2017

A message from the Superintendent

Dear Parents and Patrons,

The Missouri Legislature is currently in session and actively initiating and discussing legislation. As one might expect, your Administrative team follows and comments on a variety of proposed legislation, some of which is enacted and some of which fails only to return another year. A significant bill being hotly discussed is HB 634 Charter School Expansion.

The following Charter School descriptive information is paraphrased from information provided on the Missouri Parent website.

· Charter schools are classified as public schools funded by Missouri taxpayers, operating as private schools without a publicly elected Board of Education.

· Charter schools receive the same local, state, and federal funds as the public schools.

· Money is withheld from the local school district, in which the Charter School is located, to be transferred to the Charter School.

· The Missouri School Foundation formula distributes funds based upon the number of total students in Missouri. Should new Charter Schools create additional public school enrollment, the Fulton School District most likely will receive less state funds.

· Your Fulton 58 District is held accountable by the Board of Education and the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education; Charter Schools are not accountable to either party.

· Your Fulton 58 District is fully accredited by the State of Missouri; however, less than one half of the current Missouri Charter Schools meet state accreditation standards.

· Your Fulton 58 District accepts all students within District boundaries irrespective of ability or social status; Charter Schools can choose their students.

As you might expect, I am a traditional public school advocate. I believe local control and governance are critical features of the Fulton 58 Public School District. Parents, patrons, and taxpayers always have immediate access to and contact with the Board of Education. Your local tax dollars stay in the School District! I trust you will review HB 634 Charter School Expansion and express your opinion to our State Senator and State Representatives.

Thanks for your support and sending us great kids to work with!

Missouri Severe Weather Drill

Fulton Public Schools will participate in the Missouri Severe Weather Drill on Tuesday, March 7 at 10 a.m. with a tornado drill. In case of inclement weather on Tuesday, the make-up date will be Thursday, March 9th.

Why do we participate?

Severe weather can strike at any time in Missouri, making it important for all of us to be prepared to find the most secure shelter available no matter where we are. The statewide tornado drill is an excellent opportunity for Missourians to practice their sheltering plans and ensure readiness in case of a severe weather emergency. The statewide drill provides schools, businesses and families with an opportunity to test their planning and readiness to be able to quickly seek appropriate shelter in case of a real severe weather emergency. By practicing and increasing readiness across the state, Missourians will feel confident and prepared in the event of actual severe weather emergencies.

Read Across America Day

Across the Fulton Public School District, students and teachers celebrated Read Across America day by LITERALLY reading across America via Google Hangout. New friends were made in Washington, Wisconsin, and Texas to name a few. Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
