Announcing PBIS!
Our Mission: Arbor Springs Committed to Student Success.
From Dr. D. and Dr. T.
Dear Parents,
We are excited to announce the launch of our Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports system. As part of our commitment to student success, we joined 10 other Coweta County schools to be trained in the state model of PBIS. Primary features of the system include the notion that we can (and should!) teach appropriate behavior to all children. We believe that a preventive approach to behavior issues will enable students to be successful academically and socially. PBIS is research-based and provides appropriate behavioral interventions to students who need them, along with modeling and re-teaching of desired behaviors. Ask your students about "The Gator Way," which includes the following four school-wide expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Ready, and Be Happy!
For all areas of the school, we have developed specific indicators that students are behaving in "The Gator Way." For example, in the hallway, students are expected to walk along the blue line, face forward, keep their hands to themselves, and be silent in order to avoid disturbing other classes. We reviewed these behaviors with students on Tuesday, and they were very excited to hear about all of the possible recognitions they can receive by following the expected behaviors. Some of the suggestions from our student advisory council included lunch in classroom, an ice cream pass, choice of music in cafeteria, a homework pass, lunch in the library, being allowed to check out more books at a time, a pajama day, extra recess, a hat day, a dessert party, a pass to the Gator Store, cookies after lunch, or having the shaved ice truck come by for a school-wide celebration.
Our PBIS team worked together by analyzing behavior trends and developing the school-wide expectations. Members of the team included Mrs. Caylor, Mrs. Iyengar, Ms. Hardin, Mrs. Clay, Ms. Norman, Mrs. Kelly, Mr. Eskut, Mrs. Deling, and our coach, Hope Donaldson. After our student kickoff on Tuesday, we immediately began noticing huge improvements in student behavior throughout the building!
