The Weekly Comet
Volume 1 Issue 9 2-01-2016
Message from the Principal
As usual, as the year progresses, each week seems to move by at an increasingly faster pace. Thank you to all staff members who gave us input on the PD problem solving survey and the administrative surveys. We got some great, consistent feedback on a few key issues.
First, communication needs to be better. To that end, we will ensure that the Weekly Comet goes out each Monday. In addition, we will be sending out a monthly calendar each month and a weekly calendar each Monday. This should help improve communication with the staff.
We also got some concrete suggestions for improving PD at SIlberstein. When we reviewed the responses, we saw several themes emerge. First, teachers would like to see PD that directly impacts their teaching (make-and-takes and book studies were a couple of suggestions). Second, teachers asked for more opportunities to collaborate both vertically and horizontally. Third, teachers asked that PD be differentiated (grade level, experience, content and specific area of need were mentioned as ways to differentiate). Fourth, teachers asked that PD sessions be more interactive and less "sit and git". Finally, teachers asked for more support from the coaches.
We will be sending out a couple of follow up surveys today (3-5 questions each) to get further insight regarding potential PD topics and support needed from the coaches.
We appreciate your feedback tremendously and will continue to work to improve our performance.
Keep up the good work!
Ms. Vargas, Ms. Nunez, and Ms. Jaramillo- This team of teachers really stepped up to the plate. While Ms. Benson was out, these teachers divided her class and each took on an extra 6 students for almost 9 weeks. Because of their commitment to children and the pursuit of excellence, these students continued to grow and lost no instructional time. Outstanding!!!
Our 3 key priorities for this year:
In the coming weeks, we will be looking at additional systems we can put in place to make sure that Gen Ed students are not falling behind their Dual Language peers.
Improve Purposeful Aligned Instruction - Instruction continues to improve. We see teachers working together to plan the best lessons for specific TEKS. We see students working to improve their skills and move closer to mastery.
Improve the efficacy of professional development - Based on your feedback from last Monday, we will making improvements in how we provide PD to teachers. Look for a very brief follow up survey today.
Henry and I will continue to do regular spot observations. Our goal is to see most teachers every two weeks. We will also begin extended observations and summatives soon. All teachers will receive written notice of the 10 day window for their extended observations.
