The Nerve of Some Teachers
Mrs. Amy Ponder's AP Psychology class demonstrates the action of a nerve and how signals are sent from one area of the nerve to another. The students perform the functions of a neuron. They are able to participate in showing the results of the communication & action potential of a neurotransmitter upon reaching its threshold. They do this by catching ping pongs to the maximum threshold (in this example 3) at the dendrites site. Once the threshold is met, the action potential of sodium and potassium are exchanged along the axon of the cell (in this example, the long cord between the cell nucleus/coffee can near the dendrites & the axon terminals of the neuron the other coffee can). The message is sent down the axon with the message (the pool float) which helps send the neurotransmitters (mass of ping pong balls) across the synaptic gap to the next neuron.
