Careers resolutions for 2017
Top 5 tips for penultimate year students!
“Two weeks to go till semester 2 – the Careers Centre recommends you follow the steps below to ensure you make the most of the summer of 2017”
1. Update your CV
If a potential employer asked you for your CV today do you have a version you’d be happy to send? Make sure you always have an updated CV you’re proud of.
- Follow advice on our website, note the difference between a “holiday job” CV and a professional CV.
- On your return to university attend a CV workshop. (eg Writing great CVs & applications - 26 January; CV lunchtime express - 1 February).
2. Secure summer internship/work experience
Don’t despair if you haven’t already secured an internship this summer. Yes, many of the internships with large organisations may have gone but there are plenty of opportunities still out there - you just have to search for them.
- Make sure you are signed up to Careers Centre JobsOnline– 250+ internships each week
- Speculative (means unadvertised opportunities) – armed with your new CV send out emails or LinkedIn messages to contacts (see 4. – network).
- Keep using our website - it is continually updated with new opportunities – Summer Internship Scheme (paid work experience in University Units will open in Semester 2), Job Shop, Work shadowing, Santander sponsored paid internships
3. Assessment Centre/Interviews - preparation is the key to success
- Use all the resources available on our website
- Video/phone interviews – more employers are using these so try out our interview simulator to let you see how you perform. Keep trying till your happy with the results
- Attend workshops to help you become more confident (eg Interview Skills - how to succeed at interview - 24 January; Assessment Centre workshop skills session with PwC - 10 February)
4. Network
Connect with alumni working in positions you’d like to be in. They may be able to give you useful advice on why they were successful and tips on your application.
5. Use the Careers Centre
- If you are completing an application for an internship while on your festive break, you can still get feedback from a careers adviser using our on-line advice system
- Don’t know what you want to do or where to find opportunities? Book an appointment with an adviser to discuss the options open to you.
- Have an interview coming up? see an adviser for a mock interview.
