TEACHING & LEARNING
Mrs. Jennifer Edenfield writes:
Selection of Universal Behavioral Screener for students in PreK - 12: After a thorough review of the available research-based screeners available to identify students who have behavioral/emotional challenges, the team selected the Systematic Screener for Behavior Disorders. This screener will be conducted three times annually (early October; end of January and beginning of April) to identify students who need additional behavioral/emotional supports and interventions.
Testing for the Early Literacy Screener for students in K-2 has begun: Guide your youngest students toward mastery of the early literacy skills directly related to their future success as readers. Renaissance Star Early Literacy, measures students’ vocabulary, phonics, language, and numeracy skills, monitors achievement and growth, and tracks understanding of literacy concepts aligned to your state learning standards. This screener will be conducted three times annually (early October; end of January and beginning of April) to identify students who need additional literacy interventions.
Parent educational series - October 16 (6:00 - 7:30 pm) - “Supporting Behavior Change.” presented by Dr. Ann Hughes
New Teacher Academy - October 18 (4:15-5:15 pm) - “It’s OK to Cry In Your Car” + Self Management.
EL data is being entered into DMAC so that teachers will have BE/ESL student information/history at their fingertips. This means:
teachers will now be able to access student history on home language, program placement, status, and classroom and state testing accommodations
they also have access to state assessment scores such as STAAR and TELPAS, as well as any other plans or programs their student may be a part of.
all this information is located within one program and easily accessible
it will be a huge resource in helping teachers plan for and accommodate their EL students.
OPERATIONS DIVISION
Mr. John Knowles describes his departments as follows:
Transportation:
The transportation department received 5 new buses in September. Morale is high and there are many smiles being worn. Still searching for applicants to fill vacant driver positions on 3 routes. Current drivers and substitutes are displaying a great deal of teamwork covering these routes.
Maintenance:
On Thursday October 25, the maintenance group will be involved helping CTE's Buckaroo Race be successful. They will be painting a track shape lines for the race. The department was part of this last year and the kids loved it. The maintenance group is excited to be part of it again this year.
Environmental:
The environmental staff has started our fogging and deep disinfecting program to get ahead of the upcoming flu season. Our goal is to help keep students in the classroom.
SUPERINTENDENT / BOARD
Dear Sanger Colleagues,
We have so much to look forward to in the next coming weeks and months. Halloween, and Thanksgiving Break and Christmas. I am happy to know you will have an opportunity to renew, regroup, and hopefully relax! These first few months of the 2018-2019 school year have been incredible and, once again, you are impacting the lives of young people and families in a positive way.
Never before has accountability been as comprehensive and far-reaching as the system to which we are now responding.
This is the last year individual campuses will be rated solely on a pass-fail or "met standard" and "improvement required" scale. Starting in August 2019, campuses will, like districts, be given a letter grade. TEA will assign letter grades based on how well districts perform in three areas: student achievement, student progress, and closing achievement gaps. Seventy percent of the overall score is based on student achievement or student progress. The state will use the score from the category the school or district performs best in.
Our classroom instruction is the most important endeavor that is before us! Each of us in a supportive role of our classroom teachers want to offer the vital support that is needed. We have a clear goal focus - improving student achievement. Additional instructional resources are flowing to the greatest needs in the district. The principals are pivotal to assisting the Team of 4 in directing resources, and I add that they are doing an exemplary job in being advocates for our campus staff.
As I begin my second year in Sanger, I am reminded of the wonderful teachers, support staff and fantastic students that I met last year and I am confident there is no better place to be than SISD. I have a deep respect for the daily tasks that go on each day, many of which I have no knowledge. However, I do know that our schools are filled with people of integrity, people who have a great work ethic, and people who are passionate about the higher purpose to which we are called - shaping the lives of young people.
I thank you for all that you do every day, for being who you are, and for always helping us get better!
Best Regards,
Dr. Sandra
