1st Grade

March 2023

What We're Learning!

Math: In math this month we we will be exploring shapes by identifying their sides and vertices. We will also learn about patterns! As we learn about patterns, students will need to know how to extend and transfer patterns (see video)

Reading: In reading we are finishing up our unit on how birds use their body parts to survive by writing a bird riddle. Students will be showing what they've learned through reading and research by writing 4 sentences to describe a bird of their choosing. We will then move to our final unit of the year which focuses on how humans can help protect birds by reading different stories of birds that are endangered.

Spelling: In terms of spelling, we will continue practicing with our Magic E spelling rule as this is an essential first grade skill. Please be sure to pay particular attention to the spelling sections of the homework assignments.

Science: We will begin a unit in the next few weeks about plant needs and plant parts. Students will be expected to know the different parts of a plant, what they need to survive, and how we can classify plants into different categories.

Social Studies: We are currently finishing up a unit of study on the first Virginians, the Powhatan Indians, and the beginnings of Jamestown. This is extremely important for students to be exposed to in 1st grade because they will continue to learn more in-depth information about Virginia's history as they get to the upper grades!
