8th Grade Career Day - May 10th
8th Grade Parents, this is an opportunity for each student to share time with an adult who works in the student’s field of interest and to learn about duties and responsibilities of the person at work. Students begin the morning in SPARK homeroom and participate in career activities. Throughout the morning, they attend a keynote career presenter and three career sessions designed for their career interests. At 11:15 a.m., students sign out with their SPARK teacher. Students are dismissed to eat lunch and attend their job shadow usually beginning around 1 p.m. (Each job shadow is individually planned so beginning and ending times of job shadows vary). We encourage you to help your student find a suitable person to shadow (e.g. a family friend, relative or acquaintance). Below you will find a timeline for due dates. Please contact Crystal Bolamperti or their SPARK teacher if you have questions.
Eighth grade job shadow permission forms will be distributed to students in SPARK (homeroom) on Mon., April 8.
Zoo Job Shadow for 8th Graders – Students should not call the zoo to arrange a job shadow on their own. Rather, students interested in attending the zoo job shadow should send an individual email to Dr. Bolamperti between Mon., Apr. 8 – Wed., Apr. 10 at 4 p.m., requesting their name to be entered into a drawing. Students whose names are drawn will be contacted via Westside Gmail by Fri., Apr. 12.
NOTE: Students whose names are selected for the zoo job shadow will have a different schedule beginning at 11:15 a.m. Crystal Bolamperti will communicate with these students, via Westside Gmail, including a copy to their respective SPARK teacher.
Thurs., April 18 – Job shadow permission forms are due to SPARK teachers.
Fri., May 10, 8:00 – 11:15 a.m. Eighth Grade Career Day
**Please note buses will only bring students to school that day. There is no transportation at 11:15 when students are dismissed. Please arrange for your student to be picked up and taken to their job shadow.
Thanks for your help with leading our students in discovering their career opportunities!

Hello Westside Middle School Families and Happy Spring. Spring is a busy time at the middle school and we have a few things coming up. Thank you to all of the parents who donated water, desserts and made monetary contributions to assist with the teacher meals during parent teacher conferences. A special thank you to Dana Zeiss and Heather Egbert for coordinating and setting up the meals.

WMS Athletics
Unfortunately we had to cancel our winter sports recognition event due to winter weather conditions. Congratulations to all athletes who participated in athletics this winter. Athletes recognized as our Warrior Award winners were: Lauren Edwards, Conner Jochum, Melissa Johnson, Michael Myers, and Regan Rosseter.
The spring athletic season has started, which means 7th and 8th grade track. We have around 180 athletes participating in track this spring at WMS. Questions concerning track should be directed to either Emily Vlcek, Virgie Widdowson, or April Allen. Mrs. Vlcek can be reached at 402-408-8654, Miss. Widdowson can be reached at 402-408-8624, and Miss Allen can be reached at 402-408-8635.
Thank you for your support of WMS athletics!
Notes From the School Nurse
School Physicals and Immunizations: All incoming 7th graders are required to have a physical on file in the health office before starting school in August. Please turn in your school physical forms and updated immunization documentation. The Tdap (pertussis booster) or valid religious or medical waiver is required before beginning 7th grade. All incoming 8th graders participating in sports will need a sports physical dated after May 1, 2019.
Communicable Illness: A child may return to school when he/she is fever free for 24 hours without medication. As always, please remind your child to wash his/her hands with soap and water and cover coughs!
Injuries: Springtime is traditionally a time when we see students with more musculoskeletal injuries in the health office. If a student is needing exclusion from PE or needs other educational modifications, a note from the student’s physician outlining exclusion or other needs is required to be sent to the health office.
