Hawk Happenings

August 7, 2019

Welcome to Weaverville Elementary!

Welcome to our 2nd grade students and our newly enrolled students and families! Welcome back to all other students and families! It is hard to believe that school will start in 12 days! I hope you had a wonderful summer and you are ready to hit the ground running with the start of the 2019-2020 school year!

The Hawks Happenings newsletter is a monthly publication that is sent out electronically to the email addresses that we have on file in PowerSchool. We will also post the newsletter on our school's Facebook page and on our school website under the Administration tab. It is very important that our families keep us up to date with any changes in your contact information so you can have access to the latest news. We want our families informed and connected!

Please review the information below. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact me at Heidi.Allison@bcsemail.org or by calling the school. Let's have a great school year!

School Improvement Team

Our School Improvement Team is the decision-making team of our school. In order to ensure that we have all stakeholders represented on the team, we have two parent representatives on the team. The parents listed in the survey below have volunteered to serve on this team for the 2019-2020 school year. Please vote on a parent representative to represent you on this team. If you would like to write in a candidate, please use the 'Other' line but make sure that they are willing to serve! A special thanks to these parents who are willing to volunteer their time to improve our school!

2019-2020 WvES Advisory Council Members

How do I access the school campus?

Please remember that all school traffic should use Yost Street which is off Merrimon Avenue when dropping off students and picking up students as car riders. Parents are welcome to walk their child to their classroom the first few days of school but you must stop by the office to get a visitor sticker. After the first few days of school, parents who wish to visit the classrooms must sign-in on the LobbyGuard computer system. Your patience the first couple of weeks of school is much appreciated as traffic will be heavier than normal. Please give yourself more time than expected when visiting our school at the beginning of the year.

Remember - student safety is our top priority!

Please help us keep our students safe during afternoon dismissal. All parents who wish to pick their students up from school are considered 'car riders' and must use the car rider line. Families who live close to campus and choose to walk off campus, may pick up their child at the gym door (a staff member will help you and you must have the pick-up tag). Parents of 'walkers' should be the only parents to line up outside the gym door. This procedure helps us limit congestion as our bus riders are loading buses at the same time. Thank you for following this policy.

Please remember not to pass other cars in the car rider line. Some students exit vehicles on the driver side of the car and we must ensure all of our students are safe!

When will class lists be posted?

On Wednesday, August 14th, we will post class lists at our main entrance around 3 PM. Families can visit our campus at your convenience to find out your child's placement. Note that to maintain student confidentiality we print only student ID numbers. These numbers are your child's lunch numbers and are also listed on your child's report card. If your child has forgotten his/her lunch number, please call the school and we can provide that for you.

WvES Meet Your Teacher

Friday, Aug. 16th, 8-9:30am

129 South Main Street

Weaverville, NC

Please make sure to visit the Media Center to double check bus routes, pick up car rider tags (also can be completed in the classrooms), learn more about clubs, and get help filling out Free or Reduced Lunch Forms. Make sure to provide an updated email address in your child's classroom and your child's t-shirt size for the upcoming Blackhawk Fun Run sponsored by our PTO!

IMPORTANT LINKS AND INFORMATION

Check out the links below to learn more about how to stay engaged and involved in our school!

Volunteer Link - Click here to complete the required procedures to volunteer in our school on a consistent basis. We LOVE volunteers!

Parent Portal Link - This link is temporarily disabled but this is where you can create an account to check in on your child's grades. Parents are encouraged to sign up for an account! Remember that in 2nd grade we only use this system for report card grades but starting in 3rd grade, teachers enter grades either weekly or bi-weekly. In order to create an account you need an information sheet from Mrs. English in the main office. She cannot fax it, email it or mail it.

Contact Manager Link - This link will allow you to choose how you want to be contacted through our SchoolMessenger phone and email system. Please make sure your phone numbers are updated in this system. We also ask that you provide an email address if you have one. The information that you record here is how you will be contacted if we have a change in the school schedule due to weather and/or how you will be contacted if we have an emergency. Please keep this information current!

School Nutrition Link - Click here to read about the School Nutrition program and how to set up an online lunch payment. Remember that we provide breakfast free of charge for all students. If your family needs some support, you are HIGHLY encouraged to click this link to fill our our Free/Reduced Lunch Form - FRL Form. Our Title 1 funding is based on our percentage of students on Free or Reduced Lunch so we WANT families to complete an application. The process is completely confidential. We will also send home hard copies of the application form at the beginning of school. FAMILIES WHO QUALIFY MUST FILL OUT THE FORM EVERY YEAR IN ORDER TO CONTINUE TO RECEIVE FREE OR REDUCED LUNCH.

Need help filling out the Free or Reduced Lunch Form? Stop by the school on Monday, August 12 between 7:30 and 11:30 and Mrs. Mendoza, our Cafeteria Manager, will help you with the paperwork!

New this year...

Many of you are familiar with the mClass assessment system we have used for many years in NC to assess students reading level in grades K-4. This year the state has adopted a new system - IStation.

Istation was selected by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to support the Read to Achieve (RtA) diagnostic. Enacted by the North Carolina legislature, RtA is designed to ensure that all children in the state of North Carolina master the skills they need to become successful readers.

We will share more information as we work to learn this new system. Your patience is appreciated as we work to learn how to effectively use this system to evaluate students, plan interventions and report quality data to parents regarding student performance.

Need help with school supplies?

School supplies are not intended to be a burden on families! If your family needs help with supplies, please let us know. Our school would never want a child to feel bad because they need help in purchasing supplies. Currently, we have a large selection of backpacks and pencil boxes. If you need these items, please contact the school. If you need help with other items, we will be happy to help with that as well. Several areas churches are in the process of collecting school supplies to support our families. Please call the school at 645-3127 and share your need so we can help.

We will also have some free items available in our main lobby during Meet Your Teacher. Please help yourself to what you need.

If your family would like to purchase an additional set of school supplies for your child's grade level, we will make sure it goes to someone who needs it.
