Ready for the Challenge
Superintendent: "Reframe the way we do traditional school"
Mike Daria says TCS employees are amazing and their hard work and commitment to students is awesome.
Teachers on the Front Line
In a teleconference with members of the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, superintendent Mike Daria said he believes teachers are ready for the challenge.
"We very much intend not to get by and get through this, " said Daria. "We intend to make this a positive learning experience and quite honestly it's helping us reframe the way we do traditional school."
He is quick to point out that although April 6 marks the return to instruction, many TCS teachers have already gotten a jump on the process.
"That will start officially Monday, but so many have been doing that already," he said of TCS teacher's resolve to go above and beyond.
The Teacher's Voice
"August 1st, 2019. Seems like it was years ago. We packed ourselves into Northridge High School’s gymnasium. We reunited with colleagues, friends, and leaders. We waved our cell phone flashlights in the air singing “teach like a champion.…” We listened as Dr. Daria cast a vision for the upcoming school year. We heard the phrase “high expectations” dozens (nay, hundreds?) of times. We did all of these things not knowing what March of 2020 would have in store for us."
Shop Local
The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama invites all citizens to support our local and small businesses at this time since the following weeks will be difficult for many of our local businesses and employees.
Below are a few constructive ways, according to chamber leaders:
- Buy gift cards or certificates: A little here and there can hold small businesses over
- Shop online: Check Facebook, Instagram, and other social media outlets for business websites or stores
- Order from restaurants with Delivery, Drive-Thru, Carry-Out, or Curbside Pick-up options
- Tip generously
- If you are a business with employees working extended hours, consider bringing in meals from a local restaurant.
- Use WVUA’s COVID-19 Shop Local Directory for assistance or visit https://tuscaloosachamber.com/support-local/ for more.
