The Blue Creek Gazette
February 2018
From the Desk of Mr. Joines
The safety of our students and staff are of paramount importance. The recent tragic incident in Florida has led many schools to re-examine their safety procedures and protocols. Dr. Martin and I have been carefully reviewing Blue Creek's safety processes to ensure that all staff members have a clear understanding of what to do in a variety of emergency situations. Blue Creek will practice a lock-down drill sometime during the day on Thursday, March 1. Teachers are in the process of reviewing safety procedures with their students so that everyone will be prepared. Please take this opportunity to speak with your child/ren about the upcoming lock-down drill and stress with them the importance of taking the practice seriously and the need to follow all teacher directions. And, above all, remind them this is a practice just like we practice a monthly fire drill.
Please remember that all visitors to campus must first check in at the office and receive a visitor's pass to leave the office area. The visitor's pass must be visibly worn at all times while on campus. I would also like to take this opportunity to remind parents and guardians that we do not issue visitor passes to walk students to class after our 7:30 tardy bell has rung.
As always, I am only a phone call or email away if you need my assistance.
Sincerely,
Tim Joines
Principal

A Note from the Blue Creek Elementary's PBIS Coach - Mrs. Otis, First Grade
With any long break, routines and expectations need to be retaught. However, with an extra long Winter break due to snow, ice, delays, early releases, and canceled school followed by middle of the year benchmark testing, teachers have to focus even more effort on reteaching behavior expectations. This is a great time to revisit your expectations for behavior at home and at school. Discussing appropriate versus unacceptable behaviors is never a waste of time!
School-wide focus- volume levels in various areas of the school. Where is a level 1 expected? Where is a level 2 appropriate? When can I use a level 3?
Please continue to encourage your child to follow our 4 school rules: Be Safe, Be a Team Player, Be Accountable, Be Respectful.
The Leader In Me - Family Connection
The Importance of Goals Research has shown that the simple act of writing a goal greatly increases the chances of accomplishing the goal. If the goal is broken down into action steps and the action steps are tracked, goals have an even greater percentage of success.
At school, your child may write his or her academic and personal goals in a Leadership Notebook. You will gain a lot of information on how your child is doing if you ask your child to tell you about his or her goals. The goals chosen are meaningful to your child so be sure to practice Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood.
Create family goals such as reading together, eating dinner at the table, or doing an activity together. Involve everyone in the family in choosing a meaningful goal and action steps. Post the goal and the action steps in a visible place and be sure to track and celebrate progress!
