A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Luther Burbank Families,

I hope that everyone enjoyed a bit of rest, relaxation, and fun during the February vacation. It’s hard to believe that it is the last week of February.

Our parent-teacher conferences are right around the corner, scheduled for the afternoon of March 15th and the afternoon and evening of March 23rd. Conferences are an ideal time to meet with your child's teachers, check in on progress, and ask any questions you may have about your child's performance and growth. For our eighth grade families, conferences also afford an opportunity to discuss high school course placement recommendations. Pick-A-Time, for conference scheduling, will open at 7:00 PM on March 2nd. Pick-A-Time is linked to our LBMS website. Our spring conferences will once again be held virtually, using the Zoom platform. Meeting links will be shared with families prior to the start of conferences.

Please also be aware that school will not be in session on March 5th to make way for a full day of professional development for teachers and staff. Professional development on this day will include offerings on the topics of social-emotional learning, equity, and inclusivity. The district will welcome keynote speaker, Marc Brackett, author of multiple texts, including Permission to Feel.

Yours in partnership,

Laura Friend

Principal

Luther Burbank Students Selected to Audition for 2021 District Festival

On Wednesday, February 10th, a select group of Luther Burbank musicians submitted Virtual Audition videos to the Central Massachusetts Jr. District Festival. In preparation for taping auditions this year, students each prepared a selection of solo repertoire, worked tirelessly in Google Meets to perfect their technique and performance, and carefully crafted a recording setting to accurately capture their music.

District Festival auditions are very competitive, attracting hundreds of students from across the Central District of Massachusetts. Within the month, the top scoring musicians will be selected to participate in elite Virtual Ensembles - Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra, Chorus, and a Jazz Ensemble. Each group will have the opportunity to participate in instrument-specific virtual master classes with professional musicians from across the country.

For the 2021 season, Luther Burbank's auditioning students are:

Stella Luisa (gr. 8 soprano voice), Eleanor Stanton (gr. 8 soprano voice), Noelle Chandley (gr. 8 alto voice), Alyssa Poch (gr. 8 clarinet), Madison Oxnard (gr. 8 trumpet), Jack Fleury (gr. 8 french horn), Hailey Christensen (gr. 7 clarinet), Sarah Giger (gr. 7 clarinet), Josephine Joyce (gr. 7 clarinet), Theo Kramer (gr. 7 french horn), Isabella Paul (gr. 7 alto voice), & Katie Potter (gr. 7 trombone).

We wish these students the very best of luck in auditions. You make LBMS proud!

Middle School Student Voice Session for Nashoba's New Mascot

The Nashoba Regional High School mascot committee has been working diligently with consultants from HEARD Strategy & Storytelling on the rebranding process for our high school's new mascot. Two finalist mascot names have been selected and the high school has asked for input from our middle school students at this point in the process.

A middle school student voice session will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, from 3:45 - 4:15 PM. Interested students are asked to complete the following form by February 23rd to sign up for one of the sessions: Student Mascot Meeting.

Interested in Subtitute Teaching? We Need You!

We always want to bring talented and enthusiastic substitute teachers on board at Luther Burbank. This year, with the pandemic, we have found ourselves with an even more profound need for substitute teachers. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a substitute teacher and/or are interested in applying to become a substitute teacher, please email Laura Friend at lfriend@nrsd.net or call our main office at 978-365-4558. Substitute teaching offers flexibility and a direct interface with our awesome students. It also offers interested community members a way to contribute to our school.

Reminder! Winter Attire, Recess, and Mask Breaks

During these times, it has never been more important for our students and staff to be able to get outside for fresh air. With the weather becoming increasingly colder and inclement, it is critical that students come to school with the proper winter apparel. Please help us by ensuring that your child arrives to school with a jacket, hat, and gloves/mittens. Layers are perfect.

This year, with our longer recess blocks, students may elect to play in the snow. In this case, students MUST wear snow boots and snow pants. Thank you for your support with ensuring your child is adequately prepared. We know that sometimes it is tricky to wrangle a middle schooler when it comes to attire, and we appreciate your support from the homefront.
