WEEK 1 - June 9 - 13, 2014
Disciples of the Heart - Grades 1-2

In our time together, students will meet Jesus in a new way. Come learn about the relationship Jesus had with his parents, followers and still has with our world today. We will explore how we are called to spread Jesus’ messages of love, peace and friendship in our community. Students will engage in stories, crafts, music and activities to deepen and strengthen their faith.
Creative Cooking Grades 1-4

Girls will have fun exploring the art of cooking. They will learn about and use different ingredients, and follow simple recipes to create delicious treats! Each girl will record and illustrate recipe cards for each treat they make, which she will compile into “cook book” to bring home at the end of the week!
Adventures in Clay Grades 1-4

This workshop is an introduction to using clay as a means for exploration and appreciation of three-dimensional art. We’ll learn about the many possibilities for using clay in sculpture as well as functional objects. Traditional hand building techniques will be used to create basic sculptural and functional forms, reliefs, animals, heads, houses and figures, etc. We will cover basic hand building techniques as well as exploring glazing and firing techniques. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace and appropriate level- this class is not just for beginners!
Cinderella Around the World Grades 1-4

Students will enjoy experiencing different variations of the classic Cinderella fairytale. To promote critical thinking skills, students will be given reflection journals to record their thoughts on each fairytale. By using other books and iPads, students will then work in small groups to research the different cultures. They will explore the homes people live in, the food they eat, the games the play and much more! Students will also be responsible for creating a mini-presentation of their choice, including presentations using the iPad.
A Trip to China Grades 1-4

How would you like to take an exciting trip to China - right here at CSH? For five mornings you can enjoy some of China’s outstanding and ancient culture. Our activities will engage Chinese dance, songs, counting, paper fans festooned with Chinese characters, yoga, puppets, learn a Chinese greeting, and even make and eat dumplings! We will have a Dragon Boat Festival with drums and will decorate a T-Shirt with Peace, Love or Lucky in Chinese Characters. In fact, just about everything you learn you can take home with you. Doesn’t it sound like fun? It will be!

Musical Theater Grades 4-9

This year's CSH Summer Musical Theater Camp will travel back to the legendary, storytelling days of ancient China with Disney’s MULAN JR., adapted from the hit Disney film. This story of a strong young woman who defies tradition, disguises herself as a boy and joins the army to spare her father is a heartwarming celebration of culture, honor and the fighting spirit. The award-winning score includes favorites like "Reflection" and "I'll Make a Man Out of You."
Beginning June 9 and ending with a fully staged production on June 20th, students will have the opportunity to “put on a show” for an invited audience. Students will rehearse each day under the musical direction of Lower School music teacher, Eva Carrasquero, and Upper School theater director, Nancy Maloy.
Maker Camp w1 Grades 2-4

It’s going to be a STEAMy summer! At Maker Camp, we’ll explore the various aspects of STEAM--Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math--with fun, hands-on projects. Campers will be introduced to the basics of computer programming, simple engineering, and can get creative with craft supplies, from duct tape to cardboard. Projects will include building robots, designing and testing elaborate marble runs, creating jewelry from hardware store findings, and making a musical keyboard using bananas and a circuit board. Campers will also read widely for information relevant to their projects and keep a journal about their successes and challenges. Just bring your creativity, no sleeping bag required!
Field Hockey and Soccer Grades 2-4

CSH Cubs learn the basic skills and strategies to play the core sports in the CSH athletic program. Spend a week improving your skills, to get ready to join the CSH Tigers on the playing fields or in the pool! No prior experience required.
Due to construction, the Gym will not be available. In the case of inclement weather, the class will take place indoors, playing games and doing service projects.
Water Games w1 Grades 1-4

Who says games are for dry land only? Come join us in making waves of fun and fitness at the CSH pool. Each session of this wet week will be packed with cooperative challenges, activities, events, and contests. Students will be able to fine-tune their swimming strokes as well as build upon their teamwork skills to help prepare them for a fun and healthy summer.
Fun With Fiction Grades 1-4

Students will have fun exploring fiction while improving their reading and writing skills. They will read fictional stories and talk about characteristics of fiction writing. Girls with then explore their creative side. Taking part in the entire writing process (prewriting, planning, drafting, revising, and editing), each student will create their own fictional story. As a culminating activity, students will share their “published” piece!
Making Mosaics Grades 1-4

This workshop includes all aspects of creating your own mosaic. Each student will complete a ceramic tile mosaic while exploring design, composition and color. We will learn about the history of this ancient art as well look at contemporary mosaic work. Students will be taught basic mosaic techniques; planning the design and composition, choosing colors, laying a border, cutting the tiles, learning how to use the tools and equipment, and applying grout. All students work at their own level and are successful, no matter the experience. Completing an entire mosaic from scratch is a wonderfully rewarding accomplishment.
Yoga Camp w1 Grades 1-4

Join us this summer for Yoga Camp. Together with Miss McCorry your daughter will have the opportunity to learn yoga poses, songs, games, and simple breathing and relaxation techniques. Girls will also enjoy fun crafts and activities centered around healthy living. We will also take advantage of the beautiful CSH campus with daily nature walks.
Celebremos! Grades 1-4

You’re invited to come and celebrate Carnival, a birthday (Latino-style) and other Hispanic celebrations this week! Amidst all of the celebrating, you will have the opportunity to sing traditional songs and learn new vocabulary and phrases needed to celebrate appropriately in each of the target cultures. Explore traditional games and customs such as “tomar el té”, breaking a "piñata" and get creative while designing masks and making typical, festive decorations. Enjoy preparing a simple snack because no celebration is complete without a special treat!

Logic puzzles and riddles are an entertaining way to build mathematical, reasoning, and organizational skills while stretching your imagination and having lots of fun. New challenges are being added all the time, so if you’ve puzzled with us in the past, be assured that there will be plenty of new puzzles to solve.

Astronomy More than a Telescope Grades 4-adult

A something for everyone astronomical journey through astronomy related ctivities including but not limited to…
This offering is multigenerational. Daughters (or sons) can register and come by themselves or register a parent and come along.
Observing Saturn, Mars and the Moon at the Mother Mary Aloysia Hardey, RSCJ Observatory; photographing the moon; launching a rocket; exploring the size of the solar system through a scale model “Solar System walk” Magnification/optics lab with a telescope, microscope, pinhole camera and giant walk-through 'camera'. Speed of light vs speed of sound lab. We will examine a real meteorite, and we will discus topics including The Big Bang, Dark Energy, eclipses, solstices and more.
Monday through Thursday Evening.

Papermaking Grades 1-4

An introduction to the fascinating world of handmade paper! We will make cotton rag paper from pulp using the traditional method of screening with a mould and deckle. Students will collect various goodies to add to their paper such as feathers, leaves, dried flowers and glitter. We will make other decorative papers including: marbled, stamped and “ painted paper” (Eric Carle). Learn the interesting history of papermaking (and decorative papers) through the ages to modern times. Students will create a small portfolio of their handmade paper to take home.
Summer Nature Fun Grades 1-2

Students will explore the Sacred Heart campus while doing the following science activities: flower and leaf identification, tree rubbings, solar prints, homemade bird feeders, homemade bubbles, nature looms, ice-boats, bird watching, nature wind chimes, nature shadow boxes, homemade chalk, outdoor color matching, water experiments, frozen vinegar shapes, balloon rockets and much more! Each girl will create a beautiful, keepsake journal she will make on her own with a booklet of activities.

Experimenting in Nature Grades 3-4

Solar prints, making a solar oven, rockets, cricket experiment (do crickets chirp more when the temperature rises?) Designing and construction kites, flower dissections, nature self-portraits, leaf prints, home-made bird feeders, home-made stream table testers, water testing, looking at little critters under a microscope, flower & leaf identification.
Each girl will create a beautiful, keepsake journal she will make on her own with a booklet of activities.

Learn tips and tricks to make watercolor painting fun and easy! We will experiment with varied techniques, watercolor paints, papers, brushes and paint. Students will work from still-life, landscape, live animals and imagination! As well , student artists will create a portfolio in which to take home their collection of finished paintings.

Art of Many Cultures Grades 1-4

We will explore the wonders of varied cultures through exciting, diverse and assorted art projects. These will include: Nigerian Metal Repousse (metal relief/ tooling to create masks form various cultures-African, Egyptian, Mayan, etc,) Mexican Amate Bark Painting, Chinese Brush Painting and Guatemalan Worry Dolls. Students will gain a greater understanding of each culture as well as learn the history of each craft with these unusual and unique projects
Jewelry Making Grades 2-4

Learn basic jewelry making techniques. This class will be using wire, string, and beading to create bracelets, earrings, and necklaces. Learn how to make jewelry for yourself or to give to others!

Art Through Artists Grades 1-4

We will explore art by examining it through various artists’ eyes and perspectives while learning new techniques and a bit of art history. We will learn about the lives, methods and techniques of chosen artists and try our hands at working within their unique styles. Each day will be dedicated to another artist. Artists will include : Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, George Segal, Henri Matisse and Max Ernst.
