Teacher leader brings author to Warren School

Mrs. Kathy Newton, along with several other Region 6 teachers, is participating in a teacher leader program at Connecticut Association of Schools this year. As part of her work, she and GCS teacher Tara Gleason wrote a grant to buy multiple copies of Christine Ieronimo's book, A Thirst for Home: A Story of Water Across the World. The story is about a little girl from Ethiopia, where a shortage of clean water makes life very difficult.

Mrs. Newton chose this project because she wanted Region 6 students to become more globally aware. According to her, "Water connects us, all around the world, in a way that nothing else does. Scarcity of clean water is a very big problem, but one which is completely within the power of every individual, right down to the youngest, to grapple with."

Mrs. Newton also enlisted the help of the Friends of Warren School, who paid for Christine Ieronimo to visit Warren School today. Ms. Ieronimo read and shared the story of water across the world with the children.

The event featured performances by students from all three schools. Following the assembly, students and staff divided into groups by grade level and conducted learning activities designed to develop cultural awareness. Click here to see more photos.
