From the Principal...
January 21st, 2022
Dear Westbrook Families,
We have had a busy four-day week of learning at Westbrook. First-grade teachers have been assessing their students’ reading levels to measure their reading growth since October. Teachers use this information to adjust their guided reading groups. Our kindergarten students are continuing their study of communities and how they are different. Kindergarten is also counting by tens and ones with base ten blocks. (Please remind your kindergarten and first grade students to bring their devices to school each day fully charged.) Our early childhood students enjoy their winter theme unit, including cutting out snowmen, penguin spatial concepts, and winter sticker scenes. Students participate in dramatic play with snow forts, snowballs, ice skating, and ice fishing.
We are excited to partner with the Westbrook PTO to provide first-grade students with the Leaping into Literature program. Leaping into Literature provides an opportunity for parents to volunteer to read to interested first graders during their lunch recess. Leaping into Literature will take place every Wednesday in February. If you are interested in volunteering to read to your child’s first-grade class, please use the signup genius link in the PTO news below.
I wanted to provide an update on the Westbrook fire alarm. The new smoke detectors and pulls have not been replaced yet. Once Johnson Controls has all the new equipment in stock, they will set up a replacement date. We have been grateful that the fire alarm has not gone off in the past two weeks. Students will continue to bring their coats to specials in case of an alarm.
For your Children,
Danielle Crandall

Note from the Nurse: COVID-19 Vaccination Card Information
Dear Parents,
District 57 offers families the opportunity to voluntarily provide their child’s COVID-19 vaccination status. This information is important to have on file as students who are fully vaccinated (2 weeks post 2nd dose) do not need to quarantine if identified as a close contact (per IDPH guidelines) and remain asymptomatic. We are asking parents to send a copy of their child's Covid vaccination card to the health office after their child receives their second dose.
Thank you,
Julie Tworek, RN
