November 2019
The Principal's Corner
On November 1st, we officially received our "A" letter grade. I wanted to take a moment and thank our amazing students, teachers and community for putting in the daily effort to sustain success at Canyon Rim. There are a lot of choices for schools but there isn't one better than ours. Thank you for choosing Canyon Rim and allowing us the opportunity to educate your child.
Our Teach or Treat event was a huge success. Nearly 500 students attended and I enjoyed our Cougars dressed in their Halloween costumes. Field Day was the perfect opportunity for students to have fun and get some of their energy out from all that Halloween candy.
I look forward to seeing you at the Family Movie Night on November 15th to watch Toy Story 4.
Important reminders to all parents/guardians:
Please refrain from texting and being on your phone in our school zone. Also, be aware of the safety of children and crossing guards during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up traffic. A good rule of thumb is: Do not enter a crosswalk until the crossing guard has reached the sidewalk after all children have crossed. Because those are busy times, it's become a safety concern, and we want to make sure all of our cougars are safe!
Take care of each other,
Joe Lopat
Principal

Traditional Program Enrollment Application Information - For Siblings of Current Students
The 2020-2021 Traditional Program enrollment application is available to families registering Kindergarten-age siblings of current students.
If you have friends or relatives that are interested in applying, a separate application will become available for them on Friday, November 1, 2019.
APPLICATION PROCESS:
Applications are eligible based on the date of application and based on the following priorities: siblings of current Canyon Rim students, children of a district employee (cap of 20%), residents of Gilbert Public schools, and non-residents of the school district. Additionally, students currently on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) must submit the IEP with the application to ensure there is the capacity to provide services. All Open Enrollment students will need to complete an Open Enrollment Form.

Nurse's Corner: CRE is Latex-free!
CRE is a Latex-free school, as we have students on campus who are extremely allergic to Latex. Because Latex powder can be transferred through Latex and even Mylar balloons, we ask that parents keep the birthday celebration balloons at home. Thank you!
Nurse's Corner: For Parents of 5th Graders
To: Parent(s)/Guardian(s) of current 5th grade students,
Next year for 6th grade, your child will be required to have two immunizations. State law requires that ALL Sixth graders must have these two vaccines:
Tdap vaccine (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis)
Students entering sixth grade must obtain a dose of Tdap. Your child would not have received this vaccine any time in their lives previously. Kindergarten students are required to have DTaPs. This is not the same as a Tdap.
Meningococcal vaccine (MCV4)
Students entering sixth grade must obtain a dose of Meningococcal vaccine. It protects against bacterial meningitis. Your child would not have received this vaccine any time previously in their life.
These two shots are given once a child turns 11 years old. If your 5th grader has already turned 11yrs old, I highly encourage you to get the shots done now so you don’t have to think about it when school starts next August. I also suggest that if your child is not yet 11 yrs old, but has a birthday coming soon, to schedule an appt. after their birthday so that they can get their immunizations done now. For those students who will not be 11 years old until after school starts next August, this does not apply to them at this time. They must be 11 years old to receive the immunizations.
Once your child has had their immunizations, please send in an updated shot record so that I can update their record here at school.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Thank you,

Social Worker Corner: Food Drive & Angel Tree this month!
Hello, Cougar Families!
This is my favorite time of year, as we see the outpouring of love and support from our Canyon Rim community during the holiday season. Thank you!
We want to give a shout out to our Canyon Rim community who have helped in the past to provide holiday food boxes for our Canyon Rim families. We will once again host the food drive this year, beginning on Monday, November 25th. See the event information below for details about what to bring.
Canyon Rim will be providing holiday assistance to several of our own Canyon Rim families in hopes of making this holiday a little brighter. Please look for our “Angel Tree” that will be filled with ornament tags beginning on November 18th. We ask that gifts are returned by Thursday, December 12th. Your child may pick an ornament themselves if you provide them with the permission slip that is attached as a PDF below. If your family is needing assistance this holiday season, please contact Kerry Draney at x306.
We continue to work on the 2nd Steps Curriculum. This month we will be focusing on empathy for our 4th-6th graders. For K-3rd grade, we will focus on our skills for learning (focus and attention, listening and being a respectful learner).
For digital citizenship, we will focus this month on privacy and security, including what information should and should not be shared. Be sure to check out the lessons here.
As the holidays are a joyful time, but also a stressful time for many, please remember self-compassion. Take care of yourself and remember to BREATHE! I am available to provide supports for your students as I know the holidays can be joyful, yet also emotional. Please remember that I also have resources for basic needs, holiday meals and food pantries if needed.
Have a wonderful November filled with gratitude!
If you would like to contact me directly, call (480) 984-3216 x306 or email me at Kerry.draney@gilbertschools.net.
