MWISD Tuesday Tech Tip for Teachers
#6 - April 11, 2017
This week I want to share with you a few updates related to Canvas and a new feature in Google Drive.
Canvas is our learning management system (LMS). A LMS provides an instructor with a way to create and deliver content, monitor student participation, and assess student performance, and to use interactive features such as forums, submitting work, and more. Other LMS products you may have heard of are BlackBoard or Moodle.
If you are not using Canvas currently, I hope that you will consider trying it out for the fall. The updates shared below really help it to function even more as a center point for your class. We will be offering online training from Canvas in the summer, in person assistance for the fall, and Canvas has a large amount of online reference materials that are very helpful.

The passing back of grades from Canvas to the Skyward grade book is now working! This means that assignments that you receive and grade in Canvas can transfer to your Skyward grade book and save you time.
Important things to know for Canvas grade pass back:
- Each time you transfer grades for an assignment it overwrites the prior grades. This means you can transfer grades prior to all submissions being received.
- Due to the prior item, if you make grade changes directly in Skyward and then re-post an assignment's grades from Canvas, it may overwrite the manual changes in Skyward.
- The assignment group name you create in Canvas MUST MATCH the corresponding grading category in Skyward. A list of the Skyward category names is in the list further down.
Skyward grading categories:
Code - Description
Code - Description
AP - AP Daily
APT - AP Test
Band - Band Daily/Test
BDM - Band Maintenance

The name of the assignment group name in Canvas must match the 2-4 letter code of a Skyward grading category.
Canvas Google Drive integration
Canvas Google Drive integration
Canvas recently added Google Drive integration features to help make the use of Google Drive more seamless with Canvas.
Canvas has improved its integration with Google Apps making it easier for instructors to include collaborations, content sharing, engaging course content, assignment submission, and assignment distribution directly within Canvas. The integration also makes it easy for students to collaborate with instructors and fellow students on individual or group assignments.

Google Team Drive
NEW - Google Team Drives
Google Team Drives are shared spaces where teams can easily store, search, and access their files anywhere, from any device. Unlike files in My Drive, files in Team Drive belong to the team instead of an individual. Even if members leave, the files stay exactly where they are so your team can continue to share information and get work done.
You can drag files from a folder on your My Drive to a Team Drive. You are not able to drag folders from My Drive to a Team Drive. If you have a large number of folders to move, please open a technology support ticket and a technician is able to move folders to a Team Drive.
