What We Are Learning
Reading Workshop
- Mystery: Foundational Skills in Disguise
In reading for the next several weeks we will be making inferences/drawing conclusions. We apply this skill when we figure out why or how a character is acting based on the text evidence the author provides and our own schema. Also, every time we make a prediction it isn’t just a wild guess. It’s based on our schema and text evidence. Finally, when we figure out what unfamiliar words mean we use our schema plus text evidence. You can help at home when reading and talking with your children by getting them to tell you about the story, characters, predictions and words and emphasizing HOW they know, not just the right answer. Be sure to share your thinking and how you know, too. You’ll be modeling a higher level thinking skill of justifying your answers. You can even sneak this skill in when watching TV and movies, too.
Math
We are finishing our unit on analyzing and interpreting graphs and using the information to solve problems. Then we’ll begin our geometry unit. Our initial focus will be on attributes which help us identify shapes like sides (congruent or not) and angles (acute, right, obtuse) for 2 dimensional shapes; and number of edges, vertices, and faces for 3 dimensional shapes. We’ll learn the names of common shapes, and we’ll compare and contrast them.
Science
remember soils are formed by weathering of rock and the decomposition of plant and animal remains.
recognize rapid changes in the Earth’s surface such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and landslides.
identify and compare different landforms, including mountains, hills, valleys, and plains.
- remember the characteristics of natural resources that make them useful in products and materials such as clothing and furniture and how resources may be conserved.
Social Studies
•how individuals, events, and ideas have influenced the history of various communities.
•the concepts of time and chronology.
•the role of heroes in shaping the culture of communities, the state, and the nation.
