Ms. Black's Counselor Corner
September 2013 Edition
Meet Ms. Black- Fuller GT Magnet Elementary's New School Counselor!
My name is Sarah Black and I am the new school counselor at Fuller Elementary! I received a Bachelor of Science degree at North Carolina State University in Elementary Education with a concentration in science. In addition to this, I earned my Master of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a school counseling concentration. When I am not working, I love volunteering within the community, reading a book, traveling to new places and spending time with my friends and family. I am very excited to work all of the students and to be an active member within the Fuller community!
Sincerely,
Ms. Black
Counseling Department Services
Parents, teachers, and/or students ask to have individual counseling sessions with Ms. Black. Each session can last in between 20-40 minutes, depending on student's age and the concern. For these sessions, I communicate with the classroom teacher to schedule a time that the student will not miss core academics. Within a school setting, counseling sessions are designed to be short term, which means students can be seen approximately five times.
*Please email me if you have a referral for your child.
Group Counseling
In regards to group counseling sessions, I design the group topics based on parent and teacher referrals. Most groups typically range from 5 to 7 students. Examples of these group topics may include new students, anxiety, relational aggression, self esteem, grief and loss, divorce/separation, study skills, and social skills.
*Please email me if you have a referral for your child.
Classroom Guidance Lessons
Every month, I communicate with teachers to schedule a time to teach a 30 minute lesson in his/her classroom. In order to choose the topics for each lesson, I surveyed teachers to establish the most prevalent needs of the students to be addressed for each grade level. The classroom topics will pertain to one of the following three areas: academic, personal/social, and career. Examples of classroom guidance topics can include bullying, accepting differences, practicing conflict resolution strategies, setting goals, learning organizational skills, and exploring career options.
Consultation
I am available to consult with parents, teachers, other school faculty, and outside resources to best ensure all of Fuller's students' needs are being met. Typically parent consultations are focused on concerns at home or school and designed to provide the student will a variety of support systems. I can also help parents to find outside resources for long-term counseling for students. Teacher consultations are focused on behavioral, academic, and/or personal/social concerns. As a school counselor, I can collaborate with teachers and other staff to create a behavior plan and brainstorm effective interventions for students.
Coordination
As a liaison for the school community, I coordinate programs to best benefit our students. In the fall, I will be in charge of our Fuller family Giving Tree program as well as a food drive before Thanksgiving. Additionally, I coordinate the SAY program, which is a tutoring program for 4th and 5th grade students. I also serve on the leadership team, the PBIS committee, and the Tier III team.
