A ninja or shinobi was a covert agent or mercenary in feudal Japan. They were a person who was skilled in ninjutsu. The shinobi proper, was a specially trained group of spies and mercenaries.

Yes, in fact there were female ninjas in medieval Japan!

Most Westerns think that ninjas as black-masked men with swords who appear from the shadows and strike without warning. But not all ninja assassins were male, and not all of them walked in the shadows. Female ninjas are known as kunoichi, formed an important part of medieval shinobi clans.
