Waiting for Godot

Who is he?

He is Pozzo's slave who is abused mentally and physically.

Lucky's name is ironic because clearly he is not lucky as he treated like a dog and is obedient to his owner, Pozzo, he also has a leash around his neck. This can be seen as a form of slavery and Lucky is trapped in this horrid life.

Stockholm Syndrome

The text doesn't say it but based on what we read so far, Lucky is very obedient and compassionate towards Pozzo even thought he has abused him. This can been as Stockholm Syndrome when a captive starts showing sympathy and empathy towards their captive. The play quotes, "Noise of Lucky getting up and picking up his baggage. Pozzo jerks the rope.) Back! (Enter Lucky backwards.) Stop! (Lucky stops). This is just a example of how obedient Lucky is to Pozzo.

Lucky is actually the opposite of what Gogo and Didi are. He is the definition of consciousness and certainty because he doesn't have to worry about what to do and when to do it because Pozzo makes all his decisions for him. Unlike Gogo and Didi who wait for Godot to tell them what to do.

Lucky really didn't have a family that was biologically his. Pozzo can be seen as the only form of family as he has been Lucky's owner for a few years. This can affect how characters are defined because he is so dependable on Pozzo, which is kind of like how dependable Gogo and Didi are on Godot. One of his traits can be obedient, after all of these years being abused and belonging to Pozzo, Lucky had to acquire the trait of obedience just like an animal or slave.
Lucky's speech Waiting for Godot

In the Play and video ahead, Lucky is show to be very articulate and questions God and religion. Lucky states, "Given the existence as uttered forth in the public works of Puncher and Wattmann of a personal God quaquaquaqua with white beard quaquaquaqua outside time without extension who from the heights of divine apathia divine athambia divine aphasia loves us dearly with some exceptions for reasons unknown but time will tell and suffers like the divine Miranda with those who for reasons unknown but time will tell are plunged in torment plunged in fire whose fire flames if that continues and who can doubt it will fire the firmament that is to say blast hell to heaven so blue".

Basically Lucky is talking about God and the great divine which mean Jesus or different religious meanings. His speech also questions the human existence and what are humans doing on Earth. Then he starts to discuss heaven and hell, describing hell as fire and flames while Heaven is blue. Those who suffer or sin will go to hell while those who don't shall go to Heaven. Even though Lucky was kept trapped and beside Pozzo at all times, he had enough time to formulate a theory so he is able to grab ahold of some knowledge and the Bible.

Another trait that Lucky has is he is intellectual or smart. When Pozzo asked him to think, Lucky could have said any random thought. But he decided to focus on an important topic like God and questioning all of human existence. He sometimes got off track on what he was talking about, but he would always make his way back to the original topic of his speech. Which means Lucky is aware enough of his surroundings and mental state to know where he has gotten off at and go back.

In the beginning, when we first met Lucky we only saw him as an obedient and abused slave but now the farther we get in depth to actually know something's about all of the main characters we see that he is more well developed and smarter than we thought.

Lucky is proved to be under privileges just as Gogo and Didi are but his master Pozzo has on fine clothing and a watch while Lucky is seen in torn rags and a old hat and shoes. Pozzo could have Lucky walking around in nice clothes and a watch but he doesn't because he wants Lucky to feel like he is filth and beneath him, he tears Lucky's self esteem down so low and orders him around because he knows Lucky will never leave him. This can impact how Lucky sees himself also, his master has fine stitched clothing with nice shoes and a watch on his wrist. Yet, Lucky has neither and probably is wearing the same clothes everyday.
