Sports News From a Student-Athlete
Written by Sarah Ramsden
Even in these challenging times, athletics will continue on. The Scoreboard will provide you with more information about what is going inside athletics.
Meet the New Athletic Staff
Kellie Harrison, Athletic Secretary
What do you like best about working in the athletic department? Definitely the people I have met. All of our coaches we currently have are wonderful people. They welcomed me into this position completely and continue to stop in the office to check on me regularly. I have to give a shout out to Coach Bray! He can make a regular day the best day you've had all week just from a phone call.
What is one thing that you want students to know about you? That my office is a safe place. I want all students to feel welcomed, not just student athletes. I really enjoy helping people and want them to think of me as a safe contact. They already have so many willing staff, coaches, and teachers they can reach out to but I am here! All the way down in room A118.
Where have you worked previously and what drew you to BMHS? I recently worked for Concordia University Beloit center. I was a student advisor and still keep in contact with a lot of my students from there. I received my bachelors in business and my masters in marketing there. I have always been pulled to an education environment. I think education and having extracurriculars is very important when you are younger. I am so excited that I can work in an education environment and also a sports environment at the same time.

Dilonna "DJ" Johnson, Head Girls Basketball
Why did you choose to come to BMHS? I chose to come to BMHS because I saw a need for the youth and wanted to help fulfill that need. Female student-athletes deserve to have coaches that can relate to their circumstances and help develop them into complete student-athletes that are prepared for the next level.
What are the biggest challenges that you foresee this year? I foresee our community having to rely on faith and controlling the things we can control. There will be times when we do not know what is going on, but we can control our effort and energy every single day. If the gym is closed, we can find other places to workout outdoors. If we have to quarantine for 14 days, we can put our energy and effort into having more energetic virtual practices and study table sessions.
What advice do you have for student athletes during COVID-19? You are the first students to ever have to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. Every day you wake up, you are a survivor. As you survive, remember you still have to live to truly be happy! Living includes waking up with a grateful mind, maximizing your effort, and giving positive energy to every space you enter!

Shane Bautch, Head Boys Basketball
What should student-athletes that are interested in boys basketball expect from the program? We expect our athletes to put their best foot forward in the classroom as well as on the court. In terms of basketball, we expect our players to commit to strength & skill development workouts, both during the season, and most importantly in the off-season. We are all about what we call “daily wins.” Attend the workouts and improve every day. Purple Knight Basketball has a strong tradition of success over many years. We will honor this tradition by working extremely hard to be the best we can possibly be!
Did you play high school and/or college basketball? Favorite memory? I did play high school as well as college basketball and feel these experiences were invaluable. I learned so many things through sports that are not taught in the classroom. Selflessness, playing an assigned role, work ethic and being a part of something bigger than myself to name just a few. I have a ton of favorite memories. Probably too many to mention. What I remember most as a player is that I loved the grind. I loved working at my game everyday and lived to compete and to win.
What’s your coaching philosophy? As a coach I believe in using a young person's interest in a sport (Basketball) to teach them lessons that are bigger than sports. Lessons that will serve them in adult life. I believe in the value of the journey sports takes us on. The highs and the lows. I believe sports often mirrors life in general. My job as a coach is to provide interested student athletes with an opportunity to experience that journey.

Kaileigh Lobrano, Head Boys Tennis
Why did you choose to come to BMHS? I have been a teacher at Aldrich Intermediate for 5 years now. Growing up I was always involved in different athletic activities, so when I became a teacher I knew that coaching was going to be a part of my life too. I have been the assistant girls tennis coach for the past three seasons (and currently) and the boys for one. I love being able to see some of my former students out on the courts. Teaching and challenging new players to a new sport if they have never played is always an exciting experience as well.
What is one thing that you want students to know about you? I have two dogs and they love coming to tennis practice with me. Fun fact, I never played tennis competitively before, but my love for coaching different sports and playing tennis recreationally has brought me into this new exciting role.
What advice do you have for student athletes during COVID-19? My advice for student athletes during COVID-19 would be to stay active and stay in contact with your coach and teammates. This is a crazy time for everyone, but we can make it through this together.

Sheridan Michels, Head Girls Tennis
Why should students go out for girls tennis? Students should go out for girls tennis because of a few reasons. One, it's a fun sport to learn. Two, tennis is something one can play their entire life. If they choose to play for BMHS, they will learn the game, enjoy friendly competition and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Did you play sports in high school, and if so, what is your favorite memory from high school athletics? I played both tennis and softball all through high school. I loved so much about both sports, but a few things that are the best are the friends I still have from the sports. I still play with and against some of these people.
What are the biggest challenges that you think you’ll face this year and how are you going to overcome them? The biggest challenge we will face this year is just not being face to face yet. I know this will only be for so long, but I really hope that we will get to compete this year. I know the girls are eager to play as well.

James Hoey, Head Boys Hockey
Why should students go out for boys hockey? Students should go out for boys hockey because they will have the opportunity to represent their school and community while playing a fast-paced, truly team-oriented sport. Students also have the opportunity to challenge themselves as we compete against some of the top hockey teams in the state of Wisconsin. As we are a co-op team, students will have the opportunity to meet and become teammates with students from other schools and together will develop skills and experiences that will help them beyond high school.
What is your coaching philosophy and how are you planning to build teamwork this year? My coaching philosophy:
To create an environment that helps my student-athletes:
- grow and develop skills that will help them both on and off of the ice
- accept nothing less than 100% in practice and in games from themselves and their teammates
- hold themselves and their teammates accountable in and out of the hockey season
Why did you choose to come to BMHS? I am born and raised in Beloit so I always knew that I wanted to teach and coach in Beloit. My parents were always active in BMHS athletics so I grew up watching the Purple Knights compete so I knew that I wanted to be part of that tradition.
