The Sewing Machine
Elias Howe Jr. was the original inventor of the sewing machine and William Thomas made improvements on the sewing machine. A sewing machine stitches materials together using a needle and thread. The sewing machine made the mass manufacture of reasonably priced ready-made clothing, the sewing machine relieved many women of one of their most demanding, time-consuming domestic chores--manually sewing all of the family's clothing. The first sewing machine was made in New Hartford, Connecticut, on September 10, 1846. The sewing machine was made because clothing was made by hand, families sewed their pants, shirts, and dresses using a needle and thread. The sewing machine is important, because it relieved women of manually sewing all of the family’s clothing.
