From The Principal
“Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.” – Helen Keller
The start of a new year often brings excitement, possibilities, and resolutions. Maybe, like you, I find it a very reflective time with thoughts about what could possibly be around the corner. I tend not to make resolutions - as quickly I don't "stick" to it. However choosing happiness is a resolve worth working at each and every day. Unlike the Linda Ronstadt song "It's So Easy", there is nothing easy about being a kid, parent, or educator in this day and age, but what is certain - with a positive and hopeful spirit we can be an amazing team that conquers any difficulties together.
We are thankful to have a caring and supportive parent community. It is our pleasure to nurture and grow your children personally and academically every day. We look forward to a busy and incredibly productive spring semester. Our seat belts are fastened - trays are in the upright position - and we are ready for take-off.
Morning Drop Off
Please remember students should not be dropped off before 8 a.m.
No adult supervision is present before 8 a.m. Only honor performance groups with scheduled practice are permitted early arrival.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
There is no school on January 21st. It is a day we reflect and remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction."
—Martin Luther King, Jr., "Loving Your Enemies," in Strength to Love.
The ultimate test of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and moments of convenience, but where he stands in moments of challenge and moments of controversy.
—The Struggle for Racial Justice, Address delivered at Nobel Peace Prize Recognition Dinner, 27 January 1965

Attendance
As we progress through the school year, please continue to remember the importance of school attendance and arriving to school on time. In addition, children who arrive late to school miss the important groundwork that is laid by teachers at the beginning of the day.
The instruction and learning that occur on a daily basis in the classroom is our central mission. Parents who make regular school attendance and punctuality a high priority are helping their children learn to accept responsibility, which is an important lesson for a successful life.
As we work to increase Collins Intermediate’s daily attendance – please continue to support your child’s educational process by limiting the amount of school missed except for illness. Collins Intermediate daily goal is 98.4%.
Our current yearly average 97.69%
Second Grading Period
Hours of Missed Instruction (Early Checkout) as of December 19th = 3633 Hours
N.E.A.T. Kids—Never Ever Absent or Tardy
As we get ready to begin our second nine weeks of the school year, we want to remind everyone of the Never, Ever, Absent or Tardy (NEAT) program. This program is designed to encourage and offer incentives for perfect school attendance and no tardies. Students arriving late to school miss the important groundwork that is laid by teachers at the beginning of the day. The instruction and learning that occur on a daily basis in the classroom is our central mission. Parents who make regular school attendance and punctuality a high priority are helping their children learn to accept responsibility, which is an important lesson for a successful life.

Ambassador Awards
The Conroe Independent School District Board of Trustees honored several individuals with an Ambassador Award when Board Member Mr. Ray Sanders and Superintendent, Dr. Curtis Null, visited Collins Intermediate.
The Board of Trustees began the Ambassador Awards to recognize individuals for their positive contributions to campus life and campus climate. Throughout the year, each campus is visited by a member from the Board who surprises the award recipients while they are performing their duties as either a student or an employee.

PTO Fundraising Info
Collins Intermediate PTO
Alternative Fundraiser
Who is ready to go door to door selling items to raise money? We didn’t think so! In lieu of that we offer a ONE-TIME donation to the PTO. As a result, we rely on your donations as our “fundraiser” to provide things like field, trips, Chrome carts, tutoring, and many other educational supplements for the classrooms. If we do not meet our goal then those things may be in jeopardy of not happening…OR we will all have to start going door to door!
_____$85 I do not want a freezer full of cookie dough or to bug my friends and neighbors to buy it, collect their money, and then deliver the products. Here is the money instead. (Friend of Collins Maroon Tier- our goal for every student so that we meet budget).
_____$150 I do not want to walk, run, swim, or bike anything that ends in “thon.” Here is the money I would have helped my child raise for a “free” t-shirt. (Silver Tier)
_____$200 I really would not have been able to help in any other way, so here is my $200 to not email me about it again. (Platinum Tier)
_____$Write in your donation amount to express your appreciation for having nothing to sell, buy, or do except fill out this form or donate online.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR DONATION!
You can go online using My School Anywhere right now to donate. If you do not have a My School Anywhere account yet, you will need one for many things throughout the year so go to join.myschoolanywhere.com and use “joincollins” as your invitation code.
Seriously, go now!
Thank you,

Counselor
Welcome back Cobra families! I am so excited to start this new year with your children! Working with the second group of lunch bunch students has been so much fun, and I am looking forward to starting up round three of new lunch bunch students in February. If your child is interested in joining lunch bunch, please have him/her come by the counseling office to pick up an application. Applications will be due by February 7th.
Happy New Year to all of our wonderful Cobra families and blessings for 2019!
Character Counts at Collins!
Our goal is to create a culture of kindness where students learn to be caring, respectful and responsible citizens. Positive character traits are fostered through our school rules and expectations as well as character lessons in our guidance curriculum.
We are looking for great character in all of our Cobras. Each month, we will focus on a new character trait, which includes a new principle each week. Students will be chosen from each LC to win our Colossal Cobra Award for this trait every month.
Honesty
*Tell the truth
*Do the right thing
*Be a loyal friend
*Keep true to your word
Questions to discuss with your child:
· What would you do if someone asked you to be dishonest?
· Do you find it easy or hard to be honest with yourself? Why?
· Do you see dishonesty in advertising? Where?
· How can we make honest our family policy?
Nurse
What is the most effective way to prevent the spread of infection according to the CDC? HANDWASHING!!!! As cold/flu season peaks, remember to wash, wash, wash your hands!
If your child received vaccinations during the winter break, please provide a copy of the shot record to the clinic. This includes 6th graders who may have gotten the Tdap or Meningococcal vaccines in preparation for 7th grade. I can go ahead and input these into the computer to make the transition to Jr. High smoother. Thanks!
Medication at School: The district does not provide medication to administer to students. All prescription and non-prescription FDA approved medication must be brought to the clinic by a parent or legal guardian in its original container accompanied by a current (signed and dated) Medication Permission Form. No medication will be accepted or administered at school if brought in by a student with a parent note, no exceptions. Dosages will be administered based on the directions printed on the original container unless a physician’s order is present. Aspirin or products containing aspirin will not be given to any child under the age of 18 years while at school due to the increased risk of developing “Reye’s Syndrome.” All medication, including cough drops, will be kept in the clinic at all times. Students who have asthma or anaphylaxis may experience times when the symptoms worsen and the physician orders the student to carry an inhaler or anaphylaxis medication with them while at school. Please provide a letter from the physician with complete instructions for use as well as permission for the student to carry this medication.

Orchestra Group Photos are Wednesday, January 16
All Orchestra Students need to wear the informal uniform (jeans, fine arts t -shirt, and sneakers) to school for the picture.
Cellos and basses can use school instruments for the photo. If you want your own cello or bass you will need to bring it.
We will be scheduled for our photos in the morning. You can change clothes if you want after the photo. If you change, be sure to bring something with your name on it to keep your uniform in.
These photos will appear in the yearbook. Order forms for the photos with pricing will be sent home. There will be a photo made for each orchestra class, as well as one for Honor Orchestra, and one for CISD Honor Orchestra.
Fine arts tee shirts are still available. If your child still needs an orchestra shirt we have some for purchase. They are $10.
CISD Honor Orchestra Concert is at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, January 19 at the Bock Auditorium at McCullough Jr. High. We have 12 students from Collins performing with the CISD Honor Orchestra.
Honor Orchestra will begin on January 25. Honor Orchestra is open to all students who have been playing for at twelve months. There is no audition, but students must commit to learning challenging music and to practicing it at home. Practicing at home is essential to the group’s success. Students must attend all rehearsals and come prepared to play in order to stay in Honor Orchestra. Students need to maintain a passing average in their core classes to be in the group.
If you are interested in rising to the challenge then please join us at rehearsals on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7:40-8:30a.m. The door will be unlocked only for Honor Orchestra students by 7:35a.m. Please use the door to the building that is across from the orchestra room.

Students Walking to Kroger at End of School Day
We have also been told that students are running in the very crowded parking lot and we are concerned that our children could be hurt by motorists moving in and out of the area.
Please do not move to the neighborhoods - parents parking on lawns of homeowners and blocking traffic in and out of neighborhoods is not an alternate solution for avoiding the car line.
Thank you so much for your help!
Bad Weather Dismissal
Collins Dismissal Procedures During Inclement Weather:
· Collins will make a call by 3:45 p.m. to announce a “rainy day dismissal”
· Bike riders and walkers will NOT be allowed to bike or walk home during extremely severe rain or when lightning occurs within 5 miles of Collins.
· Families of bike riders and walkers should have a predetermined plan that when heavy rain/lightening is present, the student will ride the school bus or be picked up in the car line.
Attendance
As we begin an exciting new school year, I want to remind everyone of the importance of school attendance and of arriving to school on time. In addition, children who arrive late to school miss the important groundwork that is laid by teachers at the beginning of the day. The instruction and learning that occur on a daily basis in the classroom is our central mission. · Be in their classroom prior to the 8:50 bell
Transportation Changes
Transportation changes should be communicated between the parent and the child prior to coming to school for the day. Should you feel your child needs a reminder you may contact the front office, prior to 3:15, for notice to be delivered to your child. We understand that an occasion may arise when it is necessary to make a last minute transportation change. These last minute changes should be reserved for emergency situations only. For the safety of our children, these changes should be made before 3:15 p.m.
Checking Out Early
Students leaving early for appointments at the end of the day must be signed out by 3:40 p.m.; we cannot call for students during dismissal.
Students will be called for dismissal upon parent's arrival in the front office. We cannot call for students prior to your arrival.
Afternoon—Students Walkers
We have a large number of students that have become walkers in the afternoon. We do not promote the practice of students meeting their parents in the Kroger shopping center, YMCA or community neighborhoods. Student safety is of upmost importance— it is imperative that students NEVER cross Showdowbend in the middle of the street. A cross walk should always be used when crossing the heavy traffic that exists on our main road.
Car-Line Rules and Procedures
· Cars are required to stop behind the stop sign and not proceed forward until the stop sign is moved approximately 3:55 p.m..
· Parents may not park in the small visitors parking lot and wait for your child.
· Be courteous to those waiting in the car line and not pull around those waiting and “cut” in line before we call for car riders.
· We do not want cars moving in the parking lot when we dismiss walkers and bikers for all students’ safety.
· Students leaving early due to appointments MUST be picked up by 3:40 p.m. so there is no interruption to the dismissal process.
· Walkers and bikers are dismissed at 4:00 p.m.
· For student safety—walkers and bikers should only cross the street using cross walks. · · Children should pause and watch traffic carefully to assure it is safe to cross.
· Car riders are dismissed at 4:05 p.m.
· For afternoon pickup process, please approach the driveway from Woodlands Parkway to Shadowbend turning right into driveway. NO LEFT Hand Turn in the PM. This will avoid traffic congestion from the Research direction.
· Parents may not park within the school zone on the sides of Shadowbend to pick up students. This disrupts traffic flow and it is unsafe for children and adults to be on the busy road.
Bus Transportation
Registration for Bus Transportation
Students who were registered for bus service last year are automatically renewed each year, so only students who are new or have never registered for service will need to register for bus service. http://bus.conroeisd.net/RegisterTrans.aspx
In the coming days, CISD transportation will open the website to confirm and check all students bus information (pick up / drop off times and locations). https://routeinfo.conroeisd.net/infolocatorrc/info.aspx?OrgGuid=ORG-CONROE&profileguid=conroe_1718
Bus Rider Transportation Tags
Any student riding the bus will be issued a bus tag to be placed on the outside of their backpack. Student’s tag will be scanned as the board the bus to leave each afternoon. If a student loses their tag during the year the child should let his/her homeroom teacher know immediately so that we can provide a replacement.
Bus Dismissal At The End Of School
Students will be dismissed from class to report to their assigned bus. As buses arrive the bus number will appear on the screen in each homeroom. It is the student’s responsibility to monitor the screen and leave class to load their bus.
Changing Buses
Students may NOT ride another bus except in emergencies and only with the permission of Collins Administration. Parents must submit a written request at least 24 hours in advance of the change. Administration must have time to verify the change with both sets of parents. Riding home with a friend on Friday to spend the night is not a change that will be approved. Once approved the school will notify transportation and the bus driver.

Visitors/Volunteers
· Parents and family are welcome in our building but must check in and out through the front office with a current driver’s license or other form of identification.
· A new security feature has been added to the front doors. After school begins visitors will use a call box to announce arrival then the front desk will buzz you in.
· All parents must complete a volunteer application on-line before volunteering at the school or chaperoning field trips. The application process must be completed every year.
· We encourage you to complete the volunteer application at the beginning of the year instead of prior to a field trip. The approval process could take up to a week to process ad we would not want any parent missing an opportunity to chaperone a field trip due to the application process not being completed.
