On this continuing road..

My final course reflection - By: Caitlin Nelson

How did you “grow” as a student and as a person?

Intro to teaching has made me grow as a person in realizing a more of who I am. I came into this class weary of was I going to make a good teacher, is this really what I wanted to do, etc. Leaving this class has given me a strong sense that being a teacher is what I want to do for the rest of my life. It was given me.. well.. confidence.

As far as being a student, it has given me the opportunity to express myself. I am usually a shy person and outspoken, but this class has honestly changed that. I don't need to be afraid of who I am and to speak up when I feel necessary. I love being able to express myself in our class and I am thankful for everyone in it, including you Dr. G.

What did you learn?

Woo, what did I learn?! I learned so much over the course of this class. Where do I even start honestly. I've learned great techniques to use in a classroom, how to be an effective teacher, how to connect with your students, and so much more. I've learned things I never even knew about teaching, especially about what it takes to be certified and becoming an actual teacher. Being yourself and putting your own twist on things, as long as it is appropriate, is something we should do as teachers. One of the most important things I learned is even though we are teaching, we are still learning. I picked this picture as the background because I learned so much in this class and learning is, to me, like a road. It goes on forever, it may go one way, it may go another. Just like learning, it's never ending and it goes in many directions.

What did you think of the course, the teacher, the students, and the projects?

I LOVED it all!! This class wasn't what I expected.. it was so much more. We all are, like you said the first day, now like a family. We all work really well together and get along which is great. And of course, you Dr. G., you are amazing. You are, hands down, one of the best teachers I have ever had. I will never forget the experiences I had in this class.

The projects were so fun and challenging. They really made me think, but they were so interesting. It was great being able to express ourselves through each project. It was awesome you didn't just make us write papers, that we could pick a cool tool to do each project, especially this last one. It really taught me to think outside the box, which I loved.

What changes would you make to this course, if any?

Honestly I wouldn't make any changes. Everything was so unique and fun, what would there be to change?! You made the class so interesting and I wanted to come back every class period.. I wish our class would have been every week.

What will you change about yourself?

How I perceive myself. I have more confidence in my ideas and how I present them. I've always doubted myself and didn't always speak up, but this class has changed that for me. I know that I have good ideas and I shouldn't be afraid to tell people about them. I no longer want to be the girl that sits in the back of the classroom and doesn't ever say anything. This class has really helped me break out of my shell, and I really am glad for that.

Also, I will change how hard I work. I knew that teaching wasn't going to be an easy task, but this class has made me think so much harder about it. I will continue to work that much harder to achieve my goal of becoming a teacher, because it's what I really want to do. I know all my hard work will pay off one day and when I am teaching I will think about this class and how much it helped me.

Final thoughts..

Well Dr. G., this has been one amazing class. I am thankful I took the class when I did, not only because of you, but also because of my classmates. I have made new friends and everyone in it is awesome. I think everyone in the class took something for all of this, I know I did. I wish this class was not over, I wish it would continue. Thank you for everything you have done and everything you have taught me. You rock.
