Greetings Storm Family

This week, we will highlight a new-to-us program for students in the class of 2023. This “GEAR UP” program is in its third year having started in 7th grade for students at Shuksan Middle School. It is now focused on all students at Squalicum in grade 9. The Vision statement is written to keep our focus on students in-the-moment and to support them in their future plans; All students are academically, socially, and financially prepared to enter and complete the post-secondary program or institution of their choice.

Ms. Erin Neisinger is the program coordinator and has an office here on campus. She has already developed strong partnerships with staff in the high school and helped the Storm Family build connections with this year’s Freshmen class. Her work with students and staff has three main goals; to help students understand themselves, explore possible careers, and plan for their future career goals. Students can participate in leadership activities, personality tests, community and team building, career guidance lessons, field trips and college visits, tutoring, mentoring, and self-advocacy. Essentially, all things that will help our students develop the skills and knowledge that they will need to be successful at whatever path they choose.

This focus on students in the 2023 graduation cohort is not the end of the story. As we work with Ms. Neisinger, one of our goals will be to adjust strategies from the Gear Up program to fit the needs of all students. Effective activities for students in grade 9 will be adjusted to fit other students’ needs and improve the experiences of students in grades 10 through 12. And, as the program proceeds through Squalicum over these next four years, we will be keeping effective activities and strategies to use for the next incoming class. This truly is a wonderful opportunity to positively impact graduation rates and student success. Be on the look-out for more information on upcoming events and resources in our newsletter.
