Celebrating Hispanic Heritage
The idea for Hispanic Heritage Month began as a way to promote the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic-Americans — specifically, those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Communities mark the achievements of Hispanic and Latino Americans with festivals and educational activities.
The 2021 Hispanic Heritage Month theme invites us to celebrate Hispanic Heritage and to reflect on how great our tomorrow can be if we hold onto our resilience and hope. It also encourages us to reflect on all the contributions Hispanics have made in the past and will continue to make in the future.
Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually from Sept.15 to Oct. 15. It is a time to appreciate and celebrate the colorful cultures, rich histories, and diversity of the American Latino community. Sprague invites families to read some of the literature about Hispanic Heritage Month.
Contributors Sought for Cultural Board
The Sprague Staff Cultural Committee would love to connect with individuals, families, or groups of caregivers, who would be interested in contributing to a monthly bulletin board display to teach others about their culture or about a culture that is relevant to their family.
- The photo shown in this picture is an example of a bulletin board sharing about South Korean culture.
- In the month of October we are highlighting South Korea.
- We are flexible in how you would prefer to contribute, such as lending items, providing pictures/resources, or creating the bulletin board by yourself or with others.
- Please let us know how you would like to cooperate by filling out this cultural interest survey by Monday, Sept. 27.

COVID Aside, Keep Sick Children Home
To help prevent the spread of illness, we would like to provide you with some sick day guidelines to help with your decision on whether or not to send your child to school. Please contact the school office in the following manner if your child presents with any of the following symptoms described in this Sick Day Guidelines sheet. To report an absence please call 847-945-6686 or email Ls_attendance@d103.org. Provide your child’s first and last name, child’s teacher, and symptoms.
Some of the Guidelines Include:
Students must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.
If your child exhibits COVID symptoms, the child needs a negative PCR test before returning to school.
This includes if the student is sent home sick the previous day with COVID symptoms.
Children should stay home if they are a close contact of someone with COVID and contact the school principal and/or school nurse.
Please review other sick day guidelines like vomiting, sore throat, and experiencing a rash.
Principal Coffee - New Date
Families are welcome to attend Sprague Principal Ann Hofmeier’s coffees that are held in person this year. Principal Hofmeier will provide you with a better understanding of what happens during a child’s typical day at Sprague as well as how students are adjusting. This meeting will also give you an opportunity to get to know the other parents in your child’s school. We will allow parents time to ask questions to help them become more familiar with Sprague School. We look forward to seeing you there!

- First-Grade: 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23
- Second-Grade: 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30
- Early Childhood/Kindergarten: Held Thursday, Sept. 9
Take a picture of your child with your smart phone or camera. Tips: Use natural lighting, use a clean plain background, avoid props and filters, adhere to school dress code guidelines, submit high resolution color photo, save as jpeg.
Enter your parent/guardian information and choose the option to "Upload Student Portrait".
Step through the wizard that allows you to choose your image, crop it and submit it. You will provide your child’s name as you wish it to appear in the yearbook.
If you need help, please watch this four-minute video tutorial to help you through the process.
You have until Tuesday, October 5 to submit your child's portrait. We will not be able to accept any late submissions. Submit ONE photo per child.

Test to Stay - Update
If your child is identified as a close contact at school, they may be eligible for the Test to Stay option instead of quarantining for 10 days at home. Please complete the permission form in Unified Classroom indicating that you give the district permission to administer the BinaxNOW test. You do not need to sign up for weekly PCR testing to be included in the Test to Stay option, but we highly recommend it.
To sign your child up for free weekly testing, please review the COVID news updates for more information. If it is your first time signing up, families need to sign up by Sunday at 6 p.m. if you want your child to begin testing that week. You only need to sign your child up once to be included in weekly testing for the school year.
